Perfect sugar for an Ole Ale
Perfect for an Ole Ale. Hey, if it's good enough for Jamil, it's good enough for me! My home brew club had an Ole Ale project to fill a 45 gallon rum barrel. There were 12 participants, all of us were left to decide which sugar to use. Some used regular table sugar, some used molasses, others went as far as sorghum, candi sugar, some unusual sugar from a Mexican store. As the recipe came from Brewing Classic Styles, I immediately went to the book to ready what Jamil had to say and his thoughts were that all the best Old Ales he's had all used Black Treacle, so I ordered two cans (it was nearly as cheap for 2 as 1). I think it came out great and the 3 coolest brewers all used Black Treacle and in my opinion these Old Ales tasted the best. Smoother, more rounded, more, well, old.

no substitute!
I really like both the Black Treacle and golden syrup. By the way, buy the golden syrup in the metal can and not the plastic bottle. I don't think its my imagination, the taste is better. It may come from the heat of sealing the metal but there seems to be a deeper caramel flavor in the metal can vs plastic. I've actually noticed the same thing in chocolate syrups.

Absolutely delicious
This treacle makes a huge difference in recipes then using American molasses. There is NO comparison. I recommend that anyone who uses molasses to try this in the recipe. It is amazing.

Read reviews! Many damaged cans!
I didn’t like having to throw out a brand new damaged can that leaked. I tasted it, and it tasted like tin. No doubt due to the can holes letting in oxygen.

If a recipe calls for treacle, use treacle.
I ordered this after a failed attempt to substitute black molasses in a gingerbread recipe that calls for treacle, wasting both time & ingredients. Molasses <> Treacle. The do-over using the real stuff was a big success. I am in the US and treacle is not commonly available where I live so I cannot review this brand vs any other, but the result was so delicious that I will order & use it again.

Treacle good, lid bad.
The product is good but the container and lid will not reseal since the first time I opened it.

Five star treacle in a badly dented tin.
There really isn’t a substitute for treacle in British recipes and this is the classic brand in the iconic and beautiful treacle tin .This tin arrived badly dented, thankfully there was no leakage.I’m not going to bother sending it back (I need it for cooking) but honestly it deserves to be returned. For the money, one should receive a pristine tin - not something from a scratch and dent store!I display my British groceries in my kitchen but will definitely have to wait for another treacle tin. Sad.

Less aggressive than molasses
I first used this product to make Bonfire toffee for my British husband who was having a craving for a favorite childhood sweet, but I now use Black Treacle in place of molasses in most of my baking. The taste is a little less aggressive than molasses and just more delicious.
