Many broken ones but good colour/ fragrance
I had to use a lot of cloves lately, which is when it struck me how many broken ones there were in the soft pouches. Wondering whether it was just my impression, I weighed out 22 g (the weight of a Schwartz glass bottle) and picked out the broken ones. Schwartz did best with 1.9g broken cloves, then Valley of Tea 4.35g broken ones , then Biovita with 7.28g broken ones. This is a random test - however, it’s also clear that about 20% of the Valley of Tea cloves are broken and 33% of the Biovita cloves are headless / budless. That’s too much! A clove is a unit of measure, there are no recipes requiring you to add 3 clove stalks. Most of the essential oil is in the bud, some is located in the stalk (dk the science of spice) so really, what are you going to do with the heaps of stalks? I’d say grind them down- but even this would result in inferior powder. The last thing to mention is that the Biovita cloves are darker in appearance than the more mahogany coloured valley of tea ones. It’s a shame because I have had such a good experience with Valley of Tea cinnamon sticks - but this result is by no means a write-off. Just be prepared… buy 20% more than you need.
