and asked me if I knew any good books. She loves animals
I read the story years ago in the fifth grade, and was captivated, both White Fang and To Build a Fire. Now, my fourteen-year-old granddaughter is struggling a little in school to find substance amid the film flam, and asked me if I knew any good books. She loves animals, and so I sent her these two and within days I had a excited response back, and lately a report from her dad that she is blossoming as she speaks openly and with enthusiasm about what she is reading. Just as I anticipated... His stories are demanding with subtle and complex emotions, and in many ways advanced language for school kids, but they are engaging and stimulating, and for kids with a little grey matter upstairs such is precisely their cup of tea. Victory!

My son has gone through all the books I bought him already
My son loved the movie White Fang. He's read the book already but wanted to start building up his library of physical books. The book is much smaller in size than normal books so be aware of this before you buy. I would have rather paid more $$$ for a larger print book.

Great story
Nice font size but last couple of pages came off. Not very strong binding. Both stories are wonderful.

In American literature, Jack London is nature’s voice!
As a boy I was always captivated by the story of Buck and John Thornton. That mythic dog who bonded with a weathered frontiersman always enthralled my imagination! This book also contains “White Fang,” which is grittily descriptive, almost like a parable. Both dog and man are under nature’s law. These stories take me back to the innocent time of my boyhood imaginings, and make me appreciate the bond of a person and their dog. Profound, intelligent, layered prose! Full marks!

The Strong Call of "The Call of the Wild"
My first Jack London after an embarrassing number of decades of missed opportunities, but not my last. The immediacy of his writing and the vivid descriptions of the exotic (from my latitude) setting were truly engaging. It's easy to see why London was such a popular author in his time--and why he rightly remains well-read today.

Great stories
These stories are more ‘realistic’ than one might expect. Well written, moving, and interesting in showing relationships between humans, wolves, and dogs.

Readable!
Just received, so not commenting on writing, but have wanted to read Call... and White... and this Penguin Classics edition is clear and readable while Oxford World's Classic edition was not.

Must read
Jack London was a master story teller, and wrote from experience. This is critical reading if you want some insight into the North, the goldrush era, wolves, sled dogs, and indigenous history and culture. The accompanying shorts are also great reading, historical pieces that are as educational as they are entertaining.

Brilliant tales of Arctic life from a dog's perspective
More often than not with a contemporary work of fiction that's been recommended to me, I'm put off from buying by mixed Amazon reviews. No such risk here. The existing reviews are overwhelmingly excellent and for good reason: this Penguin Classic is absolutely worthy of its lofty status.Jack London's seminal The Call of the Wild is completely riveting, presenting a journey from comfortable southern US domesticity to Alaskan wilderness self-sufficiency from inside the mind of a beautiful, powerful and brave dog called Buck. Originally published 3 years later, the longer story White Fang tells a similar tale but in reverse, with the eponymous dog born in the wild and ending up in Californian comfort. The insights into dog behaviour are quite extraordinary, even for someone like me who has never owned one nor been particularly interested in them. London is masterful in conveying the savagery and cruelty of the Arctic, both among and between domesticated dogs, wolves and humans (both white and indigenous).I think it's right that The Call of the Wild is the more famous of the two: it's a consistently tight narrative that's perfectly judged throughout. White Fang labours its take of how dogs see the world a little more and ends on a sentimental note that I confess opened the tear ducts but somehow felt less authentic. This volume includes two other unmemorable short stories which were perfectly fine but, in covering other topics than dog behaviour, underlined how difficult it must have been for the author to build on the reputation he deservedly acquired for a work of fiction that is truly brilliant.
