Only suitable for the worlds strongest man
This item was delivered at the second attempt, being a replacement for one that never arrived. At first sight this item looks good, a hefty 2.100 metre D section aluminium pole with a cutting mechanism at one end, this is the only part that comes wrapped, and a sliding handle halfway along its length.Once the head was unwrapped it was ready to go.The cutter is operated by holding the pole with one hand and pulling down the sliding handle with the other; I found this operation almost impossible, as so much effort is required to close the beak, my wife, no weakling, could not even get the slide to move!I examined the head for damage or obstruction but found nothing untoward.Despite this difficulty I decided to try it by cutting some extraneous growth from a plum tree.I am a strong, six foot tall builder but the effort required to sever a 15mm green twig beat me!Sadly this hefty, it is heavy in use, apparently well made tool is completely useless. It is badly engineered, defies the laws of physics as it offers no mechanical advantage to the user whatsoever. If i could have rated it on a minus star basis, I’d say -100On a lighter note whoever believed it possible to hold this tool fully extended whilst pulling a cord from the bottommust have had circus training.A definite DO NOT BUY ITEM !!!

Well-made and very effective tool
This is an excellent tool for pruning small trees up to 4 metres tall, with the cutter held comfortably in both hands. I cut branches up to 50mm in diameter and the cutter head can be fixed at different angles to cope with branches berween horizontal and vertical. It is easy to use although a bit heavier than suggested by the description.

Expensive but worth every panny
I'm glad that I forked out on this item. Found it easy to use despite some reviews saying that it was difficult - short of motorising it I can't see how you could make the force necessary to operate less. My slim 24 year old daughter managed it fine, too. It has managed much thicker branches that I would have thought. Two great features; first that the head can be rotated - this is one of the reasons that I bought it and it has been really helpful and probably an essential feature at full extension. Secondly the 2nd activation method by pulling the cord from the base of the shaft rather than the pump action handle, again essential at full extension. No serious gardener should be without this.

Too stiff to use - no response from Spear and Jackson
Purchased this to replace a similar lopper, which I have used for years without issue, and have found it to have far too strong a spring making cutting even small branches very difficult. Contacted Spear and Jackson about this problem who have not replied.I would not recommend this product and am disappointed that Spear and Jackson clearly have no respect for their customers.

It works and is well made
Used it to trim all our apple trees and it did the job well. Like all such cutters, they can be a little tricky to manoeuvre, but I think the new design is much better to handle. The unit is light weight but is a bit more difficult when at full extension. I am 72yr old and I had little trouble with it.

Design fault - using plastic where metal should have been used
Plastic bracket holding blade snapped after just cutting a couple of small branches - first day I used it. Looks nice, is expensive but not up to the job due to use of plastic instead of a metal.

Not as long as it looks
This is lightweight and super sharp. The grip is 3ft up the shaft so this reduces the effective length. Safer than loppers from a ladder though. One of those tools that we should have bought ages ago.
