In 1949, Mr. Kihachiro Onitsuka began his athletic footwear company (Onitsuka Co., Ltd.) by manufacturing basketball shoes out of his living room in Kobe, Japan. He chose the name ASICS for his company in 1977, based on a famous Latin phrase "Anima Sana In Corpore Sano," which, when translated, expresses the ancient ideal of "A Sound Mind in a Sound Body." Taking the acronym of this phrase, ASICS was founded on the belief that the best way to create a healthy and happy lifestyle is to promote total health and fitness. Today, ASICS offers a full line of performance-driven athletic shoes and technical active sports apparel and accessories dedicated to bringing harmony to the body and soul.

New runner, shoes definitely make the difference!
I am going to write the kind of review I wanted to see when I was looking for these shoes. I am fairly new to running. The first pair of running shoes that I had were cheap-o payless brand sneakers that I probably shouldnt have ever been running in to begin with. So honestly, I had no idea what I was looking for. I didnt get fitted at a pro running shop like I should have. Instead, I went on runnersworld.com and found their shoe advisor, put in my info and found a selection of shoes. These Asics were at the top of the list.I am 6"1 and weigh 208 lbs. I am currently running 5k 3 times per week. Mid foot strike and have had previous problems with my knees. After running in them one time, wow! What a difference they made. I noticed my running fatigue set in later than usual and my joints didnt hurt me as much as they normally do after a run. I wouldnt say they dont need to be broken in. I would definitely take these out and run with them for a week or two before using them in a big race. The cushioning isnt plush, its more of a firm cushion. The inner sole is easily removable so you could probably replace them with something more to your liking. I do agree with one reviewer that for this size shoe (11.5) the laces were a bit too short. Also, I wear size 11 normally, so I ordered a half size up and they fit perfectly. The toe box is roomy and doesnt make my piggies feel cramped or squished.I hope this helps some of you out when looking for your new pair of shoes. I would definitely recommend these.

A Perfect Fit for MY Feet
This is my second pair of Gel-Cumulus 16s. I switched to Asics after New Balance stopped making their 1080 v3 model, and the v4 wasn't getting good reviews. I went to the local running store to try on several varieties, and these Asics fit my feet perfectly. The balance between cushioning and flexibility was just what I was looking for. In fact, I was suffering through a bout of Plantar Fasciitis when I made the original purchase, and no longer had any issues after breaking my first pair of Gel-Cumulus 16s in.This pair that I purchased from Amazon appears to have the same quality and fit as the first pair from the running store. I got about 350 miles out of my first pair, but I still use them on occasion. 300 miles was the limit for me on the New Balance shoes. For whatever reason, I'm harder on running shoes than many other people, so your mileage may vary. The only complaint I have is that the shoelaces are a little short, but this is not a reason for me to consider not buying the shoe, or even impact my overall review.

Great shoes, but your feet may get damp!
I've been running in Asics shoes since 1987. I've run thousands of miles in them and many races. In the past few years, I've either run in Nimbus or Cumulus. I'm a neutral runner, 160 lbs, who favors a cushioned ride. I generally get about 500 to 700 miles in a pair before I get a new set. The outsoles and the cushioning both hold up pretty well over that time. The Asics Cumulus shoes have been very consistent for me. The fit is the same from one year to the next, despite the "updating". The usual advice is to get Asics shoes a half size larger than your street shoe, and I suppose that's right, but I find street shoes vary quite a bit in size also, so some street shoes I've bought have the same exact size number as my Asics. The toe box has a good amount of room.I have two grumbles about the Cumulus 16. First, the mesh is quite thin, and it lets water in immediately. I went out for a run in a very very light drizzle (not much more than a mist), and my feet were damp within 10 minutes. I've never had that happen before. Yes, if I'm running in a downpour, my feet will get wet. But this was unexpected.Second, it seems like there is slightly less cushioning than before. Over the years, whenever I switch to a new pair of Asics, I'm used to feeling a softer ride immediately than how my old shoes felt. This time, I didn't feel any greater cushioning in the Cumulus 16s. If anything, the shoes felt slightly less soft than the pair that had 700 miles on them. Now that's very subjective on my part, and I couldn't swear to it. But that's how it feels.Perhaps Asics went with the light almost transparent mesh and reduced the cushioning to save a few grams of weight. Personally, I'd rather have the old softer ride and the slightly more protective mesh, even if it means a slightly heavier shoe. But the Cumulus 16s are still very good shoes, very reliable, and I expect to wear them for at least several months. But Asics, if you're listening, bring back my old shoes!!

Excellent jogging shoe
I've tried different running shoes over the years, and really I've never found anything better than Asics. And in terms of Asics, this is probably my favorite shoe ever. It's soft and the cushioning is great, and for the cushioning and size it's responsive. In terms of pure speed and minimalism, this isn't the shoe you'd want. But for jogging, especially long term, recovery runs and casual "competition" runs, I absolutely love these. The newer Nimbus is softer but is also a lot more expensive. A lot of the expense is in plushness and visual appeal, which I don't care that much about.I've read Asics is going to be changing their formula going forward soon. In that case, I think I may pick up at least 2-3 more pairs of this and just store them for later. I truly love this shoe. Also, getting it in black lets me actually wear this to more casual office environments and match it with more casual wear as well. But that's a bit unrelated to the main reason I purchased this, and of course that is running as well as walking.
