Mystik U

Novelty in this Fantasy and Therefore Interesting
Mystik U is a story about a teenage girl named Zatanna who has powers suddenly alter her life when her father abruptly disappears and an adult seeks out Zatanna for her potential use of various abilities. Such a tale is told by a writer other than a common Zatanna writer named Paul Dini, Mystik U is written by Alisa Kwitney who gives a refreshing take on the character Zatanna by conveying the heroine’s personal growth as she deals with various relationships in her teenage years when her powers still need a lot of practice. Therefore, Mystik U is different than past comics about Zatanna and noticeably contrasts Paul Dini’s take which makes Mystik U unique. The art is often quite neat with symmetry and thick lines but it will change with less details and acuteness of the profiles to characters and objects. Tinting of different colors like blue and red occurs, as well as lack of background which along with noted alterations of lines and details are all used artistically as well as purposely to express important events and emotions in the story. Such novel story telling may not be favored by readers who read past comics about Zatanna where they learned much about her personality and behavior, but that is the point of Mystik U since it is conveying a different aspect of Zatanna which overall adds interesting growth of the character. The thing about Paul Dini’s stories are that they often are an acquired taste of silliness in both humor and unpredictability of events, whereas Alisa Kwitney is providing a story that gives readers events that are bit more relatable to their college years. Even though Mystik U is pure Fantasy with grandeur events and supernatural beings, the characters’ personalities and personal troubles are relatable to people who have struggled with maintaining relationships and that can be appealing to readers who like to relate to events in a story. Furthermore, since Mystik U tells of Zatanna as young and growing physically as well as mentally since she’s only a teenager, the story holds intrigue since one cannot predict with certainty what Zatanna will do since the character has been mostly portrayed as an adult who has become comfortable with her abilities. Telling about Zatanna who needs to control herself and improve her powers as well as various skills spurs interest since she’ll make mistakes due to her inexperience and underdeveloped intellect which creates an interesting story to read. Alisa Kwitney does a nice job at giving such freshness to Zatanna and her mythology, much like what happened in the special DC Comics series called The New 52 which also provided novelty to characters by having them in a universe with an altered timeline and different histories which caused different behaviors and unique stories. Reading Mystik U is enjoyable since it is different than past work, one may be reminded of the interest in a refreshing take of Zatanna in the DC New 52 Series called Justice League Dark since again it was a different author than Paul Dini, who was previously outshined in story telling about Harley Quinn by different writers who told unique stories about Harley in her DC New 52 Series. Notably, Alisa Kwitney is a writer to keep on eye one and read how she adds freshness to DC Comics.

An entertaining take on a younger Zatanna.
An excellent addition to the DCU magic side. A pleasant change from the dark and dreary Constantine stuff. Don't get me wrong, it's not all rainbows and comradery, some very nice "evil" going on, just not the relentlessly down stuff of some of the other DCU magic elements. Although I enjoy Dini's take on Zatanna Zatara, I preferred this one. A little less humorous but a little more heart. I wish Ms. Kwitney would do more in the comics world. Hopefully this will get the sequel it deserves.
