Excellent resource to teach oneself a wide variety of techniques.
Bought this second copy as a gift. I did a lot of comparison shopping before I selected it for myself several years ago. Couldn't find a better book on this topic now either. Good illustrations. Reasonable price. and teaches the widest variety of techniques.

Great for beginners and advanced artists
This is great book. I'm a newbie to watercoloring and I think this will be a great book to get started with. It's for beginner and more advanced artists alike. I like that there is quite a bit of color theory in there. I didn't know that certain colors / combinations can have a pretty dramatic effect. The projects cover a big variety of subjects which is great.

Caerful - there are different editions of this book with different paintings inside even tho covers look the same
It was a good book but NOT the same one I got at the library with the same cover!!!!!!!!!!! THe only reason I purchased it was because I wanted to paint the photo in the book of some gorgeous blue and orange flowers. The edition I got on Amazon did NOT contain the photo I wanted to paint, even tho the cover of both books are the same!! Weird. Must have been a different edition. Live and learn.

Great book, very comprehensive
I would like to pay twice for this book - it's really amazing! It's like a comprehensive textbook covering everything about watercolor - history, materials, techniques etc. It's not a step-by-step instruction and therefore I think it's more suitable for artists at an intermediate level or above than for beginners.

More like watercolor highlights
I like to collect art books even though I've been painting for years. I never had any formal training and even if I can't use a book someone else might find it useful. This is an ok book but definitely not a complete guide. A complete guide in my opinion should have a solid brush section - essential information for watercolor. That is an area lacking for many new artists - how to use the tools. Many people start off with just a couple of brushes and you may not need much more. However a complete guide should really not gloss over that. Rather you can see how a brush is made rather than all the different types and how/when to use them.
