We were looking for zinc sulfate specifically, because some well-designed studies have found a positive effect of zinc sulfate on ADHD symptoms, but in follow-up trials, other forms of zinc (such as zinc oxide) did not have the same effect. We also wanted a tablet, rather than a capsule, for easy splitting. The entire 50mg dose of another formulation (which we tried previously) seemed to cause severe constipation, and a dose of only 15-25 mg daily was sufficient in the studies, although it seems nearly impossible to get a pill of that dosage. These tablets are flat and thin enough that I can split them with my fingers, no splitter blade needed. We also don't mind that this formulation contains a little sorbitol (which can have a laxative effect), since that may also reduce the chance of constipation. We give it at night after dinner, so any stomach upset will be slept through, and so far it seems well tolerated.
