Awesome cd

Don Gibson was very dramatic with his vocals, and I enjoy hearing the old, Nashville sound of the 50's. Thank you.

Enjoyed it but sound quality could be better.

The title is a misnomer; there are just a few hits from Don Gibson's classic RCA period included here, but the lion's share of the tracks come from his later career with Hickory Records (1970-78), for whom he recorded over a dozen albums (including a duet LP with Sue Thompson). This period produced a few hits, and most of the albums were peppered with remakes from his salad days as a hitmaker in the late 50's and early 60's. But for the most part Don's Hickory period found him recasting himself as an interpreter of others' songs--particularly younger composers and artists for whom he had helped open the door with his frank lyricism and solid sense of song structure: John Hartford, Mickey Newbury, Eddy Raven, and others.You might expect the results to come off as a little trendy and / or cheesy; but in fact Gibson's output of this period is pretty good, if anything a little looser and funkier than his classic RCA sides. Producer Wesley Rose kept things simple, with backing from A-list Nashville studio cats like Pig Robbins, Grady Martin, Curley Chalker, and Buddy Harman that subtly updated Gibson's sound while keeping his gifts as a singer in the forefront.It's worth noting that the few RCA tracks (some from as early as 1957) blend easily with Hickory sides recorded as much as 20 years later; and while there are probably no new "classic" Gibson originals along the lines of "Oh Lonesome Me" or "I Can't Stop Loving You," there are a lot of good songs and good performances here. I think this will be a pleasant surprise for anyone who is hungry for more of the man's music, or who might just be curious about his late-career work after leaving RCA. And the instrumental backing is consistently interesting and on point for the song.

This is a great CD from an artist my Dad listened to, but I have just come across. I am really liking this artists CD.

A good collection of his hits, it would have been better if "Don' tell me your troubles" was included.

Die Very Best-Compilation von NOW NOT von 2018 hat den erfreulichen Umfang von 50 Songs. Das Besondere: Bis auf drei Songs sind es Aufnahmen, die er in den 70er Jahren für Hickory gemacht hat und die relativ selten auf CDs zu finden sind. Zu den Songs seiner 60er Jahre mit den großen Hits sind sie durchaus ebenbürtig. Ein Punkt Abzug für das mäßige Booklet, das nichtmal eine Titelliste enthält und die angeführten Jahreszahlen sind auch zum Teil fragwürdig. Das mindert aber nicht die Qualität der Auswahl und der Songs der Doppel-CD.

If you are a Don Gibson fan, you will love these. There are 50 songs on two CDs and I paid less than $20 for the set.

Don Gibson hat schöne Aufnahmen gemacht. In dieser Compilation sind alle Hits vorhanden. Viel Spaß beim Hören.
