The Carpetbaggers
Ordered and received this dvd unused and no problem with it after watching. This was a good movie with a lot of good actors. Had seen this years ago and wanted to see it again and Netflix never came through with it after waiting years for it. This movie reminded me of Howard Hughes story. Well done movie. 👍

Great Old Film
Man----some of these old films are just rich with story. Lighting, directing and acting sometimes show the age of the film, but the story has so much depth and interest and without the offensiveness and irritating political statements that bombard us in the Hollywood stuff of today. This is just pure story. It's a take, supposedly, on the life of Howard Hughs. He's sharp and merciless with the people around him, severing all affection in the end. Sultry women of the day brighten the screen. It's the story of a man who claws his way to the top and whose good friend (Alan Ladd) stays by him through the all the ups and downs. When everybody forsakes George Peppard's character, Only Alan sticks by him to the end.

A movie worth seeing.
A movie that has a very busy storyline and a great cast. If you are a movie buff, you may see some similarities between some of the characters and some people in real life. If you are under 65, you may be seeing some of these characters for the first time. Having said that, there are many subplots going on in this movie and all are enjoyable.Take the time to relax and enjoy this film.

Robbins' epic still charms
"The Carpetbaggers" ( 1961 ) was the most successful of phenomenally successful author Harold Robbins' novels. This may be slightly anecdotal, but it is reputed to be the fourth most read book in history. This 1964 film version was also extremely successful. It was the #1 moneymaker of 1964, bringing in domestic rentals of $13,000,000. Director Edward Dmytryk does a very effective job of conveying Robbins' frenetic and fast paced fantasy world. Of course, Robbins had been a businessman himself, so there are financial details that anchor the "The Carpetbaggers", give it some verisimilitude. The movie is very well-cast. George Peppard plays Jonas Cord ( not so loosely based on Howard Hughes ), and he brings a convincing implacable ruthlessness and downright ferocity to the role. Carroll Baker is extravagantly sluttish as Cord's stepmother. Elizabeth Ashley makes her first screen appearance as Cord's enchanting wife, ladylike yet sexy. The movie is long ( 150 minutes ), but I found it absorbing and enjoyable throughout.

A very very good movie from Edward Dmytryk: Peppard, Ladd, Baker
To me The Carpetbaggers is a sensational movie. There are lots of great things in this movie (storytelling - acting - cinematography) and there is George Peppard handsome and talented beyond the pale. Every frame he's in makes of The Carpetbaggers an erotic movie in my eyes. As Jonas Cord Jr., George is a halo of light, in turn mean and vulnerable. One of the sexiest scenes takes place at the beginning of the movie between him and Carroll Baker. He arrives at the house, talks to the black servant, faces the staircase, walks up to Rina Marlowe's bedroom and then leaves her totally sexually frustrated. George Peppard uses his supermodel body in various ways. The love/hate scene with Carroll on the bed is an iconic moment in the film. He desires her but forces himself to walk out on her.One of my favorite scenes is when he drives into Morgan Studios at night in THAT white Mercedes - and the music! The way The Carpetbaggers was filmed is very special because the audience is part of the scene; it's like you're in the movie with the actors. There is no screen, no gap. The audience is taken in in this saga. I had the same feeling with House of Cards by John Guillermin.Harold Robbins also wrote the Betsy (with Lawrence Oliver and Tommy Lee Jones). Some say his style is trashy but I like that kind of trashy. After all, one might say The Three Musketeers is a trashy royalist soap opera based in the XVII century.George Peppard is in my eyes the most gorgeous creature to have walked the Earth since the dinosaurs. I'm in love with him and somehow he changed my life. I like EVERYTHING about him. His face, his body, the way he walks, his voice, his hair, his personality.
