Eagulls

Very cool post punk type of album. Really sounds like something that could have come out in the 80s or early 90s. They do a cover of Killing Joke's Requiem on one of their earlier EPs and that's a good reference point for their musical influences - I was reminded of KJ on the first listen of this album. Chameleons is another band that comes to mind listening to these guys. I wasn't a big fan of the singer the first couple listens but he kind of grows on you - his singing style is heavily rooted in old school British punk. What I loved from the git go was the guitar playing, these guys make a great hard edged sound.

Although you can glean specific influences such as Dinosaur Jr., Violent Femmes, Sex Pistols, and Joy Division, Eagulls are anything but derivative. They have created their own brilliant unique sound that combines driving, echoed, distorted wall of sound guitars overlaid with irresistible chorus-laden post-punk riffs and chugging, angry bass lines. Tough Luck is a perfect example of this. George Mitchell's brash, broken vocals are rife with unchecked aggression and desperation. In a world chock full of rehashed, apathetic, diluted, studio-glossy music, Eagulls stand as a shining beacon of pure punk angst.

I'm a big fan of early 80s-era punk, and this band revives that classic sound while also infusing their own modern style, giving them a familiar yet unique sound. If you like Killing Joke's first album, you'll love the Eagulls.

I heard the song 'Tough Luck' on Sanctuaryradio.com. Was going to just buy the single but went for it and bought the whole album. This entire album is great.

De toute évidence, le climat de ces années 2010 n'est pas à la franche rigolade du coté de Leeds, citée massacrée par le duo Tatcher/Blair. les Eagulls viennent de là et c'est sans doute un point commun avec Joy Division par exemple, que d'avoir émergé dans un cadre - en l’occurrence une région industrielle - laissée pour morte par le libéralisme. Mais les groupe de Manchester ne sont pas les seules fées à s'être penchées au dessus du berceau de ce groupe. Iggy ant de Stooges et nos légendaires frenchies LesThugs (à redécouvrir absolument si vous êtes passés à coté) sont les deux grosses branches de l'arbre généalogiques qu'on peut dessiner sur la jaquette (superbe) de ce disque. Une basse agressive et qui ne lâche rien, une batterie/marteau pilon, des guitares réverbérantes à souhait et un chant comme un cri dans une plaine morne et abîmée. On l'aura compris, ce n'est pas la Saint synthétiseur poppy très dans l'air du temps que nous sommes en mesure de découvrir. C'est quelque chose de plus urgent, de plus dense, bref de plus rock. Enfin une raison d'y croire encore.

Gli Inglesi Eagulls, nonostante peschino a piene mani dal post-punk anni 80, riescono a sfornare un ottimo album discretamente potente.
