Ice Mummy

Good book but be cautious of the images
I love the book and wanted to share the history, discovery and science of ice mummies with my son (9 year old) but the images scared him.

Doesn’t do topic justice but not bad, and kinda the only option
I have mixed feelings about some of the little nonfiction readers lately. This is a good example of one- the writing is fine, informative if a little dry. If you compare this to, for example, Pompeii- buried alive! (Love that one), it’s a bit disappointing. The vast majority of pictures in the book are photographs of the mummy (mostly frozen in ice, or on a table). It seems kind of lazy. You know when someone takes like six pics of the same thing from slightly different angles? It doesn’t seem like a great way to propel a child forward into the reading though.I imagine using pictures, if you obtain rights to them, is probably cheaper than hiring an illustrator. But it would have been neat to see more of things like artists renditions of events, of the tools etc. There are some cool pictures, just found some of it a bit monotonous for such a cool subject. When I was a kid most nonfiction readers had illustrations, but nowadays it seems like they’re mainly pictures unless it’s sometging with no existing pictures (biographies or people from long ago, for example). I like the topic of this book very much but I don’t feel like either the writing or the images, for the most part, did the book justice. That being said, I don’t know of any other book on this subject I could read to my kids yet. Lol.

Great, but needs updates
Very engaging and good images, but outdated bc new information has been discovered since this publication.

Nice informative book for my elementary kids
Bought so we could read during our ancient history chapter for school. My 9yo son enjoyed this book and will reread it on his own time.

Great Non-Fiction for Kids
My kids loved this book! They have both become very interested in non-fiction and this book is very interesting. This book is the right length that it can be finished in one seating, but still contains a great deal of fun facts. It describes one of the oldest mummies ever discovered and my kids loved that it contained many original, if somewhat gruesome, photos. It is very well written and is ideal for readers in the 2nd-3rd grade level. My kids have read this several times and still talk about it.

Interesting for kids without being gruesome
My sons loved this book. Finds it very interesting without being scary to learn about this discovery of the mummified body. I read parts to my 4 year old as my 8 year old read along on his own. Good book for him to keep at his desk in school during free read because it keeps his interest and is challenging enough. We really like the leveled Step into Reading series.
