DEGLYCERIZED LICORICE FOR HEARTBURN, STOMACH ULCERS
Deglycerized licorice is made from the licorice plant, and is used for soothing sore throats and ulcers. When mixed with saliva , DGL becomes active and helps stimulate formation of mucous to buffer stomach and intestines from acids. Ulcers heal more readily when coated with mucous. It needs to be dissolved in your mouth before swallowing so that it can mix with saliva. DGL should be taken 15 to 20 minutes before meals, and wash it down with a glass of water. Taking DGL after meals is ineffective. Can also be dissolved in warm water to make a mouthwash to help heal mouth ulcers called canker sores. Although DGL is considered to be free of glycyrrhizin, it is possible for some small amounts to remain. If you have a history of heart trouble, high blood pressure or low blood potassium exercise caution. I have a long history of gastritis/ acid reflux, and decided to give this a try. I'm also taking aloe vera juice, melatonin, magnesium, hcl, glutamine, unflavored gelatin, digestive enzymes, mastic gum, and soon I'm gonna add slippery elm. If you suffer from acid reflux, most likely your stomach lining has been compromised , so you got to work on repairing your gut first, then all your acid reflux symptoms are gonna start going away. I personally know this is a long process, that it's not gonna happen overnight, but I'm willing to do it. A healthy diet is a plus. Refined carbs and junk foods should be eliminated. Eat lots of raw vegetables, and fruits. Start your day with a glass of veggie/fruit smoothie. I haven't had any side effects while taking it. One last note, if you suffer from GERD, don't take PPI; they only mask the symptoms, and won't correct the problem. Side effects of PPI are: malnutrition, weakness, hair loss, constipation, headaches, anemia, risk of bone fractures, just to name a few.

Work well, taste great, at least to me, a licorice lover!
Surprised, these actually work pretty well, used them frequently while enduring the completely horrific 7 week long experience of Prilosec withdrawal....fortunately I made it through with quite a bit of help most days from DGL & Tylenol...my advice to the world, don't ever let your doctor put you on Prilosec, what a terrible, terrible drug! Bonus I happen to looooove licorice, was always a pleasure when I needed to use it! Thankfully, now I am nearly completely free of heartburn/acid reflux, as well as the completely apparently unrelated stomach problem that first caused the doc to prescribe that rubbish that gave me the nearly unbearable heartburn & acid reflux when I finished tapering off of it, as directed when no longer needed. Though I can't say it was an hardship to me to take the DGL since I really enjoy the licorice taste.

How I treated my esophagitis
I suffer from esophagitis. I follow these simple steps to treat my esophagitis. DGL alone will not cure you, but when used in conjunction with other lifestyle changes, it definitely helps in my personal case. 1. As per the instruction, 20-30 minutes before a meal, I chew on 2 DGL tablets. It's important to chew and not just swallow because saliva needs to interact with it in order to increase mucus secretion, which helps protect your lining against the irritating acid. 2. After a meal, I refrain from drinking water for at least an hour. This is an excerpt from an article (you can Google "Say No to Water between Meals" to read the entire article): "Elaborating on what exactly happens inside you when you glug water during meals, Sabherwal says that it gets absorbed by the intestinal walls of the stomach. "This absorption continues till it becomes concentrated enough for the digestive juices to begin digesting your food. However, due to it getting mixed with water, this concentrated substance is now thicker than the food contents present in your stomach. So less gastric juice will be secreted to digest your food. The result is, undigested food leaks into your system as it gets absorbed through the stomach walls. This will also lead to acid reflux and heart burn." Drinking water with meals can also cause a surge in your insulin levels, almost like the way high glycemic food would affect you, Sabherwal cautions. "The more insulin is released in to your blood stream, the higher the chances of you storing fat in your body." 3. Do not lie down after eating. 4. Do not eat before going to bed. Give food time to fully digest. 5. My doctor told me regular cardio exercise helps with mucus secretion. So make sure to get at least 30 minutes of cardio daily. 6. Cut down on soda. The CO2 from soda seems to irritate the lining. 7. Cut down on alcohol. Alcohol is an irritant. To me, beer is more irritating than wine, probably due to CO2 and being served cold. 8. Of course, avoid overly salty and spicy food. Instead of taking medicine to reduce acid, I think a better approach is to stop consuming irritants and follow behavior that helps protect the lining of your esophagus.

PPI's or DGL you decide
I'm trying there because I'm having negative side-effects from PPI's. I know thousands of people take them, with no issues, but I'm unfortunately am not one of them. I like the taste too, and take them before my meal. I know it says to take (3) after food, but before food is working for me

Almost pure sugar & where is the DGL?
Not as advertised. It is literally just licorice candy. They are so sweet a can’t even finish the bottle. Do not take this if you are trying DGL to help with effects of SIBO! These will leave you bloated and in pain. Recommends 3 tablets AFTER meals, DGL should be taken before meals. The 3 pieces of candy contain 2000mg of sugar (1000mg of added sugar), 150mg Glycine and 75mg DGL Also contains sugar alcohols that cause GI upset, gas, bloating and diarrhea. Glycine is a generally safe amino acid but can be very dangerous for some people. Interestingly, these have such a low dose it’s essentially a worthless addition, it’s about only half of what a commercially available egg contains but somehow twice as much as the DGL for which the supplement is intended. DGL standard starting dosage is 300-800mg BEFORE meals. These offer a dosage that is only 10% of that. Most people buy a bottle thinking it’s roughly a month’s supply. At 100 tablets, this is roughly 3 weeks at recommended dosage and going by the amount of DGL alone vs industry standards, would be about 1 day’s worth… ONE DAY! But the bottle contains over 66,000mg of sugar, which is 5-1/2 TABLESPOONS OF SUGAR
