Solid tool
This is a solid tool that could use some improvement, nonetheless, I like it. It is solidly built and has most features that I'd like in a mortiser in this class. What I'd like, is a stronger motor. 1 HP vs. the current 1/2. the cost increase is not that much and makes it a much nicer machine. height adjustment could use a better design to hold its setting. not a big deal for me though as I fixed it by replacing the thumbscrew.lastly, the chuck shaft could be 1/2 longer to comfortably receive the drill as it currently seems to be a little short.otherwise, very good machine.

Some disassembly required - Basically what I bought is a set of castings.
I purchased this with low expectations after reading the latest reviews. I was not disappointed. But I needed it and took a chance.I'm a machinist with extensive experience in repair and rebuilding of machine tools. Sometimes that's a burden. With handle and lever attached my low expectations were exceeded. The ram moved with some effort and I could feel the teeth engaged too tight with the rack. It freed up at the end of the travel but loose. This is without the motor yet and it can rock it about 1/16" side to side. The saddle was nearly immobile. Ok, must be the rust preventive. A liberal application of penetrating oil spray and some movement happened. Seeing paint and feeling grit in the grease that was on the ways, full stop! Within ten minutes it was a pile of parts.Rough as a corn cob is the best description of the machine work. Dull tools, poor setup, too fast a feed rate. Burrs, paint and grit on the ways. What you see in the first picture is everything wiped with a dry cloth. There is grit in the paint. The edges on the dovetails so sharp they bind onto the mating corner. I worked over the column ways with a scrapper and files. The gib is a joke, burrs, and divots for adjustment screws are too shallow and misaligned. After considerable work I got a decent motion without the rack and gear. After deburring the rack and gear, removing blob of paint from mount face. Cleaned up and assembled I verified the rack is too close to the gear. There is about 0.010" of lift from top to bottom. Gibs have to be loose to function. Going to machine back side of rack and shim if needed. And that is just one of three.Yeah, its just for wood working I know. I can work to 0.0002" this I would not use for 0.2" I am not measuring anything, I don't want to know how bad it is. File and stone to functional fit and motion. Check and correct spindle alignment.Bottom line: If you have my skills and experience, looking to have a compact and useful machine? Not willing to pay $180 return. Go for it, but have realistic expectations. It would be better if it came as loose parts though. If your expecting to unbox and go - that isn't happening.

It works
The box came badly damaged, it looked as if someone in the shipping process had taped the box back together in several corners, luckily no parts were lost so no need to get ahold of the manufacturer. Easy to assemble and very heavy for its size . Works Like it is supposed to .

Bashed to pieces
This was so poorly packaged that everything rolled around inside the box scraping, denting and even breaking pieces. It was covered in some kind of grease also. Even if th8s had been mailed securely, it has problems like the back fence not being square. This is an expensive machine for us. My hubby has wanted one for a long time. The price was so good we thought we could deal with any small problems but there are a lot of problems. I was really hoping for a decent machine, but there is no way I would recommend this to anyone. :[

Very good accuracy at a reasonable price.
I received this morticer just a few days after placing my order. It arrived in a wooden but it was in pieces. I don’t know how the delivery service even got it to my door. All aspects of the machine met my expectations except for the depth setting.I have been working on a project that requires many two and one half inch mortices in oak. Very satisfactory. I’d buy again.

Missing the Main Part
The box was in rough shape when I got it, and it was missing parts. Missing the Main Part, the machine looks different from the picture. I have ordered 3 of these, and they needed the shaft from the motor to the drill chuck. The setup instructions are useless.
