Mosses of the Northern Forest: A Photographic Guide (The Northern Forest Atlas Guides)

I would say I’m a serious amateur moss enthusiast. I’ve dabbled in bryology and moss ID with compound microscopy and already possess two photographic guides and a few flora books with dichotomous keys. I questioned whether I needed yet another moss book but was intrigued by the unique layout of this book. I’m really glad I got it! It’s packed with useful information. I especially like the habitat groupings (which help you know what to look for in specific habitats), simplified leaf diagrams, wonderful silhouette photos against the black background, and comparisons to similar species. If you already have a field guide or two and are on the fence, get it. It’s a steal of a beautiful book for the price!

The media could not be loaded.  I make terrariums for a living and I often go out looking for moss, finding new species to collect and experiment with. But there are so many types that identifying them can be a challenge. This book helps me to do just that. It’s not a field book due to its size, in that respect it’s more of a coffee table book (gorgeous cover and photos!).The key is helpful in identifying which species are common, which are rare and which will need a microscope for proper identification.I think the clear photography is the best part of this one, as many moss ID books have such poor photos.

A most complete source for identifying mosses. Appreciate all the colorful pictures and regions where they grow.I don't understand why Amazon stopped consumers from looking inside books.

This book is fantastic!! So many wonderful details and presented in a way that was very well thought out. So glad I stumbled upon this book! My 4 year old loves it to, she points out her favorite types of moss.

Quite helpful book for beginners to ID mosses, even if you don't live near the great northern forest. I especially like the "maps" showing typical locations within a habitat for different kinds of mosses.

Photo quality is top notch, great reference for env artists and the like.

I have no complaints about the book or the content but the top part of the spider arrived pretty damaged and has turned to peel.

I bought this book as a gift. It is a beautiful full with a lot of information and picture. Very clear and hight quality pictures.

Great book on mosses for everyone. Amazing photographs

This is legitimately one of the best identification books I’ve encountered! It’s nice and large with incredible photographs. I particularly love that there is a section on habitats that groups the mosses that are commonly found together in the same habitat. It even includes a diagram of where they are found in each habitat! And photos of the habitat types from across the northeast. I can’t wait to go out and collect some mosses to bring home to identify! Five stars for me!!
