Finally found a good boot
I have never owned KEENs before. I do however have wide feet and toes that like to splay out. I love to hike especially in the mountains. If you’ve ever hiked inclines, you know how unfortunate it feels to have squished and bruised toes. I debated on a size 8 or 8w. I decided to go for the 8w. I will say they are very wide. For me, I love this. But I want to give the disclosure that I believe the regular size also runs a little wide as well. The insoles in these are a dream. Not memory foam soft, but comfortable right out of the box. They are sturdy enough to feel like you have enough support. I LOVE that these have a strap on the side. This allows you to tighten the boots around your ankle and keeps your feet from pushing to the front of the boot. For inclines, this is so so important. The arch support is phenomenal. These are very waterproof from what I have tested them in. Puddles and small streams mainly. KEEN as a brand have been pfas free since 2018 and keep the environment in mind when making products. Overall very happy with the purchase, price point, and company as a whole.

Comfortable boot with nice detailing, but the jury is still out on quality..
Right out of the box these boots were extremely comfortable. I was quite pleased and am looking forward to hiking in them. Per comments in other reviews, I hope that they last and are durable. I did read through many of the reviews before purchasing these and was surprised that no one commented on the reflective strip in the back the sides and the top, which was one of the things that caught my attention first, but maybe that’s because I’m often out after dusk. I like how the back reflective ribbon strip can also be used as a hook to help you put on your boot. However, I can see why another reviewer thought that the tongue of the boot could be a little thicker and wider but I think I’m gonna have to log a few miles or several miles before I can adequately review that function. I did not need to put in my own arch support so far, though the insole that these boots come with are quite flimsy, so at some point that might be a good idea. I think it must be the design of the boot itself that is so comfortable and is unrelated to the “arch support” insert . But it is removable so it’s not a dealbreaker. Several people did mention the fabric part between the leather upper and the rubber bottom tore easily, and I could kind of see how that could happen, as well as comments about having issues with the adhesive between the boot upper and the bottom rubber traction part, coming unglued. Since I have not worn them outside yet, I don’t know how durable of a pair I received, but at the moment, because they are so comfortable for me, which is rare, I am going to try them out and keep them. After doing a thorough exam it appears, and I could be wrong, that rather than an issue of the quality of the workmanship involved with the shoes falling apart quickly, it could be more of an issue of the glue that they use and the type of adhesive. Bad batch? different manufacturer? You know, like vitamin companies... Quality of different manufacturers is quite discernible if you are sensitive to it.

Lightweight and great traction
These hiking boots have been absolutely wonderful. In the past, I have hiked in. Chacos or tennis shoes. I have hiked many miles, but I wish that I would have bought these sooner! I did a lot research and was looking for something that would be comfortable, durable, and lightweight. These do not disappoint. I wear a wide size, and there is plenty of room for thick socks, too. They are lightweight, great traction, and waterproof (as long as you do not go higher than the ankle :) ). So far, I have worn these on 3 various terrain trails of 3-5 miles and did a half marathon trail hiking over 4 hours continously. The boots were great suport while crossing creeks, rocks, dirts, and pavement.

Update: took forever to break in
I have had them for a couple weeks and walked about 10 miles in them trying to break them in and get used to them. 1st issue: the toe box is actually not particularly wide. Coming from a pair of Altra hiking shoes, my feet definitely feel cramped. But I was also spoiled with that toe box, so I was willing to overlook that. It's definitely wider than a pair of Merrells. 2nd issue: The right boot has started making a crinkling sound, like the glue is dried out and bad. 3rd issue: The left boot has a weird seam right above the pinky toe that is rough and creates blisters. This is not in the right boot. The right boot feels awesome, just makes a weird sound. For the money, I would have liked a sturdy pair of boots that didn't cause blisters. I think Keen needs to tighten down their manufacturing. The fact that two boots in the same pair to have two very different problems, is concerning. I have a hiking trip coming up that I don't have time to break in a new pair for, So I'm going to wrap my foot, bring some extra glue, and my old Altras for backups. Fingers crossed these hold up in the New Hampshire white mountains. **UPDATE** I took these boots with me to climb Mt. Washington. I wore them as much as possible in the days leading up to the hike. After about 15 miles of wear, they FINALLY were broken in. It was like a switch flipped and they're super comfortable hiking boots now. The weird seam is no longer poking out, and the toe boxes loosened up. They served me quite well on Mt Washington. The soles were super grippy and worked well on wet and slushy rock. When we got into the compacted ice, i added Microspikes and the boots felt very stable with those on as well. I've had hiking boots where spikes felt weird, but felt fine on these. Updating to 4 stars, because I'm still not totally sure about the glue on the one boot. I took it to a bootery and they said it was fine, but without removing the sole they couldn't be 100% sure. I recommend these IF you have the time to break them in THOROUGHLY before your adventure.
