far warmer than the "pro" version, but barely fits 23" heads
This is a warm hat, compared to the "pro" version which is just a helmet liner. I couldn't find that distinction anywhere, so I ordered both the "pro" and the regular version of the Dome Perginon. The pro version is 1/3 the warmth and has a Gore label, this one is the old style fabric (which you can not blow any air through) but doesn't have a "windstopper" tag. Returning the pro version. Neither has any spare room with my 23" head.I guess hat makers think we're all growing smaller over time? This XL fits far tighter than their old XL, barely comfortable and won't fit over my baseball cap like the old one would. Unless they start making XXLs, or selling by actual head size measurements, I'll keep looking for a better (read bigger) one. Pity, because until I lost my old one it was my favorite winter hat.PS: The Outdoor Research version of this hat is even smaller! Two stars off for them!

The shape of this hat provides much better coverage. The fabric is designed to stop wind
I got this hat because so many others leave part of my ears and upper part of my neck exposed. The shape of this hat provides much better coverage. The fabric is designed to stop wind, and it does this well, thus preventing body heat from being blown away.A drawback of wind resistant fabric though, is that it is not very stretchy, so getting the right size is crucial. The first one I ordered (a large) was too big, and unless I pulled it down over my eyes, it looked like I had a cone head. I imagine if you get a size too small, it will really squeeze your head and be uncomfortable. Medium fits me well, but it can still feel tight after a while.Wind resistant hats also impair your hearing a little bit (as I've found out with other hats). It's not like wearing ear plugs or anything, but it can be noticeable. If you're out in howling wind, this might not be a bad thing, but at other times it might not be beneficial.A few more comments about the appearance... You can't go too wrong with black, so that's fine. The top of the hat and the band section have a different texture and look (as you can see from pictures). I'd prefer they looked the same. I also would prefer the logo was smaller and/or darker. I don't really want my forehead to be an advertizing billboard.Overall, the hat is very warm without being super bulky, and that's the main reason I got it. I'm docking one star because it can feel a bit stiff sometimes and I think it could look a little nicer.

Best Winter Hat Ever!
The Mountain Hardwear Men's Dome Perignon hat is the best winter hat I have ever owned. This one is my second one. I bought the first hat about 5 or 6 years ago, and I've worn it every winter, which for where I live, is about 8 months of the year. It is the warmest hat ever, and it is impervious to wind. It stays on and never blows off. My first one was blue and black. I bought it for $12 at T.J. Maxx. I was extremely careful where I put it because I didn't want to lose it--but, alas, after years of extreme caution, I lost it in the street. I had put it in a side pocket of my car door, and it must have fallen out onto the street. I panicked when I discovered it was gone, and I drove back to where I'd parked. No hat. I was devastated. I mourned its loss like I'd lost a dear old friend. I realized that I had to replace it immediately. I sat down and ordered the new one within minutes of having lost the old one. I agonized a bit over the size--M or L? I decided on L, which turned out to be the correct size. My head measures 21.5 inches just above my ears. It's a tiny bit loose, but I haven't washed it yet. I chose the yellow and rust colored hat because of the earthiness of it. I've also been getting into Buddhism, and, those colors seemed Buddhist (like monks' robes). I love it. I am in love with a hat as much as one can be in love with a garment. I'm going to take extra caution not to lose this one, but if I do, I feel confident that there will be another one waiting for me at Amazon.

Very warm hat
Have had one of these hats for over five years. Finally got my wife to try my hat December 2019 during a very cold walk near the Twin Cities in MN. She now owns two herself. Cold ears has always caused her to not walk outside in the winter time. With her new hats she walks with me even when the temperatures are in the teens and the wind chill is near zero. Have had my hats on with wind chill around -40 and it makes the difference in spending time outside. Before getting an alpine helmet for skiing this hat was my go to in everything outside in winter. Have a 7.5 diameter melon and wear an XL comfortably. My wife wears a large, she tried a medium but found it was too tight. You don't want them to fit tight, wont keep you as warm. Washes well and are durable over the years I have had the same hat.

Big enough for large heD
I am a woman with a narrow face and long head so my head circumference is pretty big; usually I take a men's x large hat. Those are hard to find. This hat fit well, covered the ears, and was pretty, with a rich color. Nice dense warm fleece. Unfortunately I lost mine this year . I was happy to find a replacement but unexpectedly it was a duller green, not nearly as pretty.

Big head
I must have bigger head. Largest hat size still felt a bit snug. I did stretch out manually which helped. It is very warm and really appreciate how it covers my ears. Another reviewer made comment that it is harder to hear through it…I would agree.

limited application
I don't have a large head, so I ordered a medium. The hat has a snug fit, and it barely covered my ears. The back does reach the neck, but I was expecting it to cover the back of my neck, which it doesn't.It's decently warm and has good wind protection, but it's shorter length is its main drawback. Not really protecting the neck means I have to use some sort of neck warmer. Not going below the ears means the ears are not adequately covered, and because it's snug, it's hard to fit ear muffs beneath it. It can be stretched a little or you can try a larger size, but the snug fit is required to prevent it from being blown off by the wind due to its design.I believe that if it was elongated instead of a dome to cover forehead to down the neck, and a couple inches taller to really cover your ears and some of the cheeks, it'd be perfect.
