Amazing new upgrade since my good old H4N!
I used to have an H4N from over 10 years ago... Finally, I wanted something with a few more inputs... But also wanted the compact "slightly bigger than a Walkman" size ... So I finally bit the bullet and bought this H4N.... First, it is great having the four inputs... You can run the four dials right on the front to control the volume for each of the four channels... This was a huge upgrade for me to be able to have that hands on control... You can also decide which tracks will be recorded by clicking on and off the front buttons that correspond to mic and then each of the four tracks... One a little red light comes on, you know that channel is to be recorded... One thing I do while adjust the volumes before recording, is simply monitor/listen with only one channel at a time on, and then later turn on all the channels I want to record... I could not find a section in the manual on how to isolate channels for hearing recording levels, so I came up with this way... A huge improvement is the fact that the unit begins recording as soon as you hit record.. In older models it would be "armed" for recording and then you would have to hit record again... What a nightmare if you (or an assistant) happened to forget that step, in for the beginning or a recording... Huge, huge improvement... Another major improvement is that when you are done recording and hit stop, this device will automatically have saved the recording.. In previous models if you turned off the power with hitting stop, the recording would be lost... In fact, and I tested this, if you actually turned off the recording in the middle of making it a recording, that recording will be saved... Another major improvement if you are recording unrepeatable events (like weddings)... Also, a beautiful thing is the easy to read and understand RGB screen .. This goes without saying... This unit does not come with a power supply... You will be expected to have your own Mini USB cable... At first I thought that was being cheap on their part..... But it is really an advantage as you will no longer be a slave to having a proprietary power supply that can easily get lost... You also want have to manage with the form factor of whatever they give you in the form of a power-supply or as we sometimes call them "wall worts"... And the ways they hogged power strip real estate... I do miss the days of the included manual... You do get a quick start guide... And I did print up the online manual, which is huge... But with my experience with the H4N, I was up and running in all aspects without reading any of the full manual... I believe this device should be easy for anyone into this field to pick up and get going on in a hurry... And at the very least some very basic 5 to 10 minute YouTube videos on this product will do the trick... This is a great upgrade and I highly recommend the device for sound quality, easy of use, and portability...

A very capable device for audio nut.
I made the investment to acquire this unit after long study between this and other similar products (and models). I have had an older model before (Zoom H4), very similar in function, if not identical with extra inputs. This model has the detachable mic and input modules. The stereo XY mic that came with this is hefty and feels well made. I have yet to drop it and test it's ruggedness, but I am not going to test that. If by chance I do I will try to update the outcome in the reviews. I have used this for a show to capture live music playing and it does a very well job. The initial learning curve was very easy, straight forward. You can set what type of audio formats (WAV or MP3) with a whole slew of bitrates and quality levels. Essentially I think the highest setting 96Kbps at 24 bit (it's max, no 32bit) on a fresh 32GB SD card, you might get about 8-9 hours of record time... lower the quality and you can go a very long time... over 800 hours on the lowest mp3 quality setting. This comes with Phantom power, powered from either the USB (on pass-thru power from a usb power bank, no batteries). One gripe at first was getting the thing to stay on, as my power bank had an auto shut off if it doesn't draw enough power. This isn't a gripe on the H6, and I am glad it use very little power. It's why a fresh set of batteries last 20 hours on average, depending on how many inputs you use, quality, and phantom power. I noticed onced I armed the REC, the powerbank would stay on. I like the fact that you can hook up another 2 XLR inputs in replace of the stereo condencer mics. I find that on the go, you can have mobile podcast recordings up to 6 mics. 6 mics with boom and mounts, 6 headphones, 1 H6, 1 6-port Headphone amp. You're good to go! Did I mention this can be used an an audio interface? You can use the inputs in your favorite DAW. Some complaints others might have are the gain knobs exposed, if you bump them they might move on you. I'm considering 3D printing a small cover (and maybe a rubber band?) to avoid this. Overall great unit for capturing audio.

This product is bundled with a free download of Wavelab Cast through a German company called Steinberg - all the Wavelab online stores are not available and it is near impossible to get any customer servicer from Steinberg!! Makes for a not very good experience. Great product although very expensive for what it is and you really get nothing with it - like additional ambient microphones or any cables to connect it to your laptop, no case or cover. Nice touch though that you get a subscription to Wavelab!

Due to our current state of lockdown we need to find our way on this transition of working from home (the new normal). I am happy that Amazon can still provide us with deliveries and access to the shops online. Record label and music producer. musiicrec.co.uk. cheers, Edgar
