Kelly Joe Phelps Is Intense
Kelly has a folky blues style. This collection of solo live performances is right up there with his other releases. He takes a song through different layers of tone and fills each one to overflowing. How one man can make so much noise without overcrowding a song is beyond me. He fills every nook and cranny with so much melody from a voice that doesn't seem real. His finger picking style is similiar to that of Bruce Cockburn in my opinion. His songs sort of just roll together.A few great covers and the rest Kelly Joe originals, a leisurely stroll to perfection.Add it to your collection, you won't regret it.

Doesn't get much better than this
I had the privilege of taking in a live performance by Mr. Phelps in Fall River MA this past weekend, and all I can say is that it was mesmerizing. This live CD does an excellent job of capturing his utterly unique take on the acoustic blues. It's a must have for any serious blues afficionado. However, you MUST see this man live - I promise you will not regret it.

A soulful tour de force
The most profoundly soulful recording I have heard this side of Skip James. Beautiful, haunting and ethereal. Phelps is a virtuoso guitarist, a powerful vocalist and a sensitive songwriter.

beautiful music
I have all Kelly Joe's cds and this is my current favorit. His music is so warm and soothing. I have had the pleasure of seeing him perform in person and this cd reminded me very much of the live performance. His guitar playing is wonderful and I highly recommend all his cd's.

nice recording, but where's the slide?
I've listened to Kelly Joe Phelps since his first recording- actually own them all but for his ep- I was initially surprised when he avoided playing slide on "Sky Like a Broken Clock", then confused when he had Steve Dawson playing slide on "Slingshot Professionals"- I was hopeful when I heard he was doing a live solo recording, and when I first saw the cd cover on his site, with his guitar laying flat, I'm afraid I had assumed (my fault) that he had returned to his amazing original style of slide playing- Unless my ears deceive me, there's nary a slide heard on this- please correct me if I'm wrong- I've never had the pleasure to see Phelps play live, hope to at some point...

This is a very fine recording and an essential part of any KJP song collection
This album is a real pleasure to listen to because Kelly Joe is at his intimate best. It can sometimes be difficult to choose between the very different versions of the same song. In the end, they are all easy to listen to and they reflect the constant striving to play what he feels, when Kelly Joe is playing live. Having seen him in small concert venues of less than 200 people on several occasions since 1995, this album reflects that closeness which KJP fosters between the artist, his performance and the audience. The guitar accompaniment is outstanding and I will not be the only guitar playing fan who wanted to throw my guitar away once I had heard the intricate playing of Kelly Joe on lap slide guitar, banjo or straight bottleneck acoustic guitar. Over the years, he has become more certain of his singing voice and this album reflects that growing confidence and the ten years between the release of that brilliant album; 'Lead Me On'.It was eight years after the release of this album that the album 'Slingshot Professionals' was released. That contains the songs Jericho, Not So Far To Go, Waiting For Marty and Cardboard Box of Batteries. My preference is for the more personal and intimate renditions which all appear on this particular album. If you are new to KJP you will not be disappointed in this album. He remains one of today's finest acoustic blues and lap slide guitar players. He manages to write compelling lyrics and songs that are reminiscent of all the great blues artists of the last 100 years. If you cannot have the pleasure of seeing him live, this album is the next best thing. Highly recommended.
