A fine 2014 algebraic edition
Ignore comments written before May 2014, they are about the old edition of this book, and they tell of problems with printing, binding, and old descriptive notation. This new edition has changed all that. The book is a delight to hold and to work with. Reinfeld arranged the mates by themes, so that by using the book as a tutorial, not just as puzzles to be solved, you can organize the different checkmating tactics and patterns in your mind. If you know and can employ the tactics in this book you'll be a fearsome chess player. I'm rated in the top 10% of USCF tournament players, and I recommend this book highly, along with its companion, 1001 Winning Chess Sacrifices and Combinations (2014 edition only!).(I really think Amazon should not be printing reviews of older editions without making that fact very clear.)

Get the old edition!
Yes, this is a fantastic book, and yes, the pages fall out. There's a 1955 edition called, "1001 Ways to Checkmate," (not "1001 Brilliant ways to Checkmate.") It's hardbound, and the pages don't fall out. It's exactly the same book. I bought a good copy on the used market for $.03 plus shipping.

Great book, binding is weak however
This is a classic tactical trainer, my only problem is that the binding is weak and eventually, pages will fall out.

Great book but bad print
The book is written by a chess-master who provides excellent chess puzzles. However, the actual book is poorly printed, all the puzzles are difficult to see because of the black white printing of the chessboard and pieces. It will display clearly as an e-book.

Incredible Results
My 7-year-old grandson went from lack of focus to winning 7 of his eight matches this year. He and I set up the board and try to figure out the checkmates together. His game has really improved.

Five Stars
I purchased as a gift but the receiver said it was very helpful with learning new moves.

It's ok for practicing tactical motifs. I personally prefer the CT Art ones. They seem more practical. Or the ones in the encyclopedia of chess combinations.

classic book
Some of the mates are cooked (submit them to your computer), and the notation is descriptive, not algebraic. Nevertheless this book has instructed players for generations and is highly recommended as a single source for many mates.

1001 checkmate problems
This book provides 1001 chess diagrams, all with a forced checkmate for the side to move.It is split into different chapters, each with a different theme: Queen Sacrifices, Checkmate without the Queen, Storming the Castled Position, Harrying the King, Discovered and Double Check, Pawn Promotion, A Variety of Motifs and Composed Problems. Each chapter starts with a brief introductory page with some general advice on solving the problems that follow, but this is NOT a book which teaches you how to solve the problems. That is something you have to do yourself - you learn by solving the problems and then recognizing similar positions that crop up later. There is no doubt that working your way through this book will help improve your chess. However, if you're not prepared to try to solve the problems yourself, forget it - you'll be wasting your time. So, if the idea of solving 1001 problems fills you with dread, do something else instead!Although I think this book is excellent, I can't give it 5 stars for two reasons: Firstly, the pages of my copy starting falling out soon after I bought it - please note that this is NOT a Dover publication (their books are of excellent quality), it is re-print by a different publisher.Secondly, I gave up on the Composed Problems chapter. There are 70 of these composed problems and I found that I simply wasn't interested in solving these positions which look like nothing you will ever encounter in a real game.In summary, I think this book is excellent value for money and if you are prepared to work through it your chess should improve - you might even enjoy the experience!
