Great read and reference!
Really impressed with this read - I already have a firm grasp on the fundamentals of photography, so I was concerned this would be just a rehash of old concepts, and when I saw it was only 128 pages, thought how much info could it have?! Totally wrong on both points. The author has a light sense of humor that makes this a super smooth read, read it in one sitting, and for every concept introduced, references a talented photographer's work, with explanations of how the concept applies. I found a few photographers I hadn't heard of, as well as got to see classics like Cartier-Bresson, and even Mike Brodie's work, which I was already a huge fan of his train hopping series. If you're looking for greater insight into how to capture moments out in the world, fabricate your own artistic moments, or control and direct to create in studio, then this book will help get you moving on your creative photography endeavors mighty quick.

My photos are better because of this inspiring read
I love taking photos of friends and family as well as capturing shots of local people when on holiday and decided to buy this book to get some advice on how to make them better. I'm glad to say it has already improved my photographs considerably. Rather than so many books which baffle and intimidate with technical jargon, Henry Carroll's advice is to learn the rules but not worry about having to adhere to them all the time. His approach liberates and inspires you to have confidence in your own photography, which I really appreciated as it means you enjoy the process so much more! The books' layout is great too: A guideline on each page is accompanied by an inspirational example and often a deconstruction of the image - all presented in a very accessible, easy to understand manner. Some may find the style a little too simple for their tastes but it takes real intelligence to take complicated concepts and explain them in a simple and easy to understand way (without losing any of the content), which this book does fantastically. As a result I've already been able to apply some "layering", used more interesting crops and compositions and think my "street photography" is also improving. I can now look forward to looking back on photos of my life via much higher quality photos than I might have if I hadn't read this informative, inspiring and fun to read book.

helps a good deal in studio.. smaller help outside a studio
I am NOT a studio photographer.. but, I will be doing more portrait shots soon. I needed to gets some idea of what I need to look for, set up, lighting, poses.. etc..this is a good read, and while more dedicated to a studio, multiple light set ups, possibly with slave flashes as well as extra help ( and if that is YOU or about to be You, then yes, you WILL get a great deal of use from this )... if you are "on your own" with minimal equipment, you still have some solid tips you can apply " in the wild" as I say...as in, outdoors, semi candid portraits, trying to look for a good backdrop, maybe set up with minimal equipment, etc..for me its only about 3 stars worth of real world useful material.. NOT KNOCKING THE BOOK, just what I could get out of it, was or wont be as big a help., as to someone with studio set up, or simply about to get into it, and will want some ideas ON that equipment, which this is very helpful in showing.if you are in studio/building one... this helps..if freelancing around, minimal equipment, this helps, just not as much... many shots have multiple light sources, light boxes, using someone as help,etc..

Both practical and philosophical
This is a lovely little book, a great companion to Carroll's original Read This If You Want to Take Great Photographs. I am an absolute novice photographer, and find highly technical photography concepts too difficult to hold onto while I'm also trying to capture a shot. This book lets me focus on one small concept at a time, which is great for a novice who just wants to practice. But this same review could have been said for Carroll's earlier book. What sets this one apart for me is a really simple-but-profound concept, and that's the importance of knowing why you're taking photos in the first place. Carroll's book has helped me think through my own sense of purpose in taking photos of people, which in turn has helped shape the way I'm taking those photos.

Best Book In Its Class
I bought Henry Carroll's first book and have found it a must-have and invaluable resource for many aspects of photography so when I heard this follow up was available I ordered it immediately. This author has a very natural way of communicating and inspiring in the way no other photography books have (and I've bought a LOT). Thoroughly researched with such an imaginative way of communicating the artistic nature of photography makes this in my opinion the best book in its class. Highly recommended!

A great refresher & read...
So I have been a photographer for over 10 years & I became a photographer just as the technology world was converting to the digital age & sometimes you forget some of the basic principles over time & with this book it’s definitely a good read especially when it let you some things that school may have taught you in the past or even things nowadays that could be so simple that you overlook or even over think them too. This book is great for all levels of photographers of all kinds.
