Color Out of Space

Not a straight up horror
As spoiler free as possible. Color Out of Space is well paced - as it could easily have been chaotic. It has good practical effects that reminded me at times of The Thing - although this film is not a straight up horror in that vein. Nicolas Cage does get to 'Cage out' a few times towards the end, however it is in keeping with the tone of the movie and I would rank this among his good performances overall. This movie won't be for everyone - it's central theme is similar to Alex Garland's recent film Annihilation, but approached from the point of view of a family who happen to live next to the place where a meteorite lands. If that doesn't float your boat, then avoid. While there's more than enough horror moments to make a red band trailer - the tone here is more disturbing - and a bit sad - than scary. Overall, I enjoyed it - it hangs together pretty well for what it is, nice cinematography, decent acting - pacing at times a little off but never enough to derail the story. Expect a dose of craziness with horror moments though, or get those one star reviews ready. BTW I never watch trailers before I watch a movie as they tend to show key plot points and almost always show the ending somewhere. They are also misleading and tend to show the movie that the company wants to sell rather than the one the director has made. I just watched the trailer. I'd have been salivating to watch that tautly crafted big budget horror masterpiece if I'd seen it before watching the movie. It's not the movie I watched though.

All hail the Gods of nightmare Lovecraft and Richard Stanley
A stunning modern film interpretation of this H. P. Lovecraft story. Truly a visual masterpiece. I have long sought the start of a Lovecraft film Renaissance whereby the film reproduces the feel of the story as portrayed in the book. Keep with it and you too can have your wife look at you in a new and horrified light. I am expecting my extensive Lovecraft literary library to be burnt to cinders soon. Lasciate ogni speranza voi que entrate. Gorgeous film in every way.

Rubbish
C**p film , n cage really has sunk too a low . How anyone can give this five stars is beyond me .Meteorite hits the earth , hole the size of a manhole cover with conveniently placed rocks around the outside after hitting the ground at probably 26,000 mph is the first of many jokes .really poor b movie , dont bother . Even if you suspend your disbelief this is one cheapo film and it shows .Tries too be sophisticated but really fails with poor characters and hammy acting ,bad characters with nothing going for them , been all done before and much better too .Is this a comedy film or what ? I cant make up my mind on it . Like i said in the title Rubbish .

A CULT MOVIE OF THE FUTURE
Just a superb basic sci-fi movie. Great story, cast, and script. No big budget, but this film doesn't need it. A genuine modern B movie that is perfectly paced, and all hangs together as it should. Cage acts well, but the whole cast is competent, and polished enough to carry it off together. A bit of a homage to The Thing and Annihilation, but with more tongue in cheek moments. WATCH IT !

Old school horror for 20’s.
Wow this film delivers the goods. At last a HP Lovecraft film to be proud of. Imagine “The Thing” crossed with “The Shining” with a dose of out of space LSD!I’m so glad Richard Stanley hasn’t messed it up and can only hope he makes The Dunwich Horror next.

Yes, a great attempt, but....
This could have been so good, it had all the right ingredients for me: Lovecraft, Richard Stanley, and the temptation of nostalgic practical effects. On the whole, like some others have mentioned, it's an enjoyable b movie, but it could have been so much more ... and better. And why? The certificate rating: it's a 15. Why, oh why don't filmakers, especially horror genre filmmakers push for the 18 certificate anymore? So many horror films are rated 15 now, that we may as well get rid of the 18. (Yes I know it's all about audience figures, age of cinema going audience etc. and money.) But, it surely can't be about cinema paying audiences anymore when there are so many platforms out there to watch genre specific films. So come on, stop cutting back when it looks like the horrific scene is getting interesting, and ruin the work special effects guys and girls are putting in. Stop with the rapid cuts and editing. Watching this, I felt like there was going to be a directors cut coming along very soon (there were too many edits for my liking), and there probably will ... But for the sake of people who love the genre, bring the uncut one out first. And if I'm wrong, and this is the only version that Richard Stanley shot, cut and released .. Then wow! After Hardware and Dust Devil, he's sold his soul. If this is the future of horror then it barks a lot, but has no bite. A missed opportunity sadly

I blooming loved it
If you don't like weird movies, look the other way, this isn't for you. I adored it!The basics are simple, in the back of beyond a space rock falls and starts to affect things. A descent into either madness or horror or both then occurs.I loved everything about this from the feel to the acting to the colours. Wonderful stuff. But if you don't like odd movies... Just saying.

This is going to be a cult classic
God this is awful.Awful in such a good way that it will achieve cult status. Someone, somewhere forgot to write a script yet Cage and Richardson still manage to sell it.This is proper old school B movie world, and if you can suspend your disbelief long enough to get you over the gaping plot holes, and total rip offs from other films, then you'll be fine.
