The National Gallery: Masterpieces of Painting

This is simply the most extraordinary art book I have ever seen or purchased. I have many, many art books from the national gallery and from the metropolitan museum of art.This book collects the major pieces from the collection,and the quality the printing. The binding are extraordinary; worth having just for the quality.

This is an amazing-looking volume with high quality reproductions, but it stinks. The notious smell of the printing chemicals is very strong to the point of requiring paintstaking airing out outside with turning of pages... Not sure it this is a production defect that may affect the lasting quality of the book...Another criticism applies to writing and organizatiin. It is caleidoscopic and fragmented. The author chose to folliw a very fragmented chronologically-based presentation, that for both novice or expert readers presents a puzzling choice. It is impossible to create a wholistic understanding of how visual art evolved or which trends dominated and echoed throught the years. If it reflects how the art is displsyed in the National Gallery, I feel sorry for the viewers and doubt the sanity of the gallery curators.

Loved the whole book, excellent paper quality. Loads of information on each picture, a book we have picked up daily. Excellent conversation piece. Great buy.
