50 Contemporary Artists You Should Know (50 You Should Know)

If you know absolutely nothing about contemporary artists, this may not be a bad introduction. It tries to cover all aspects of contemporary art--2D, 3D, multimedia, and left me feeling like I really didn't get to know enough about the artists in any one area. I do study art and read broadly about contemporary art, and was struck by how few of these artists I had ever heard of. I know, I know--that's the point of a book like this. But I assume that the reason I SHOULD know these artists is that their work is seminal and available, and so far that hasn't been the case for me.As an overall intro to art and art history, I will have to say that the "50 _____ You Should Know" (pretty much all of them) are a good reference set to have. The articles are typically concise, well illustrated, and whet your interest in learning more about the artists.

Great book! The quality was very nice for a paperback: glossy, thick cover. The artists inside are a good collection for anyone to get a glimpse into late 20th, early 21st century artists. I used this as a supplement to the text book teaching my high school Art History class and it worked great for that. Each page has a few examples of the artists' work plus some interesting facts about where they are from, where they went to school, their influences and inspiration. There were a lot of contemporary books out there and I had a hard time choosing one, but I made the right choice with this one.

A great way to get acquainted with new artist of the 21st century. I particularly liked a photo of each artist and their time line overhead reflecting world events during their life.

My husband requested this book for a gift and he has been glued to it for weeks now. He finds it very inspirational. So glad I bought it for him. He is a painter uses oil and water colors so guache.

"50 great..." is a wonderful book i discovered at Mass MoCA. I did not not have much time to lok at it as the museum was closing but I decided to get a copy once I got home. Full of great pictures and information about the artists and the body of work of each.

Its a really well done book with excellent photos and brief bios. .I just needed it for a class and have no real interest in contemporary art. I find it weird and this book just enforces that perspective. LOL

Excellent Book. Well illustrated and produced. Very helpful to a layman to get into the subject.

The book is in excellent condition but the cover is printed upside down which is rather confusing......
