Q: Can this be laid directly onto the page of a book to magnify it or does it have to be held abpve the page ?

It must be held above the book. That degree of short focal length magnification probably can't be done with fresnel lenses.

Q: Glass or pvc? it says both in the description.

It is a little tiring to hold, but really good and the lens is glass and really clear. Hope that helps
