Nantucket: Island Living

Dined at Uncle Charles' on Blackberry Pudding
Who did?Captain Gardner's niece (hence the reference to Uncle Charles) as recorded in her diary in July of 1846. The entry reads, "They live in a little cottage place on a little rise of ground". Then comes the part about the blackberry pudding. The "little cottage place" today is one of the exceptional residences profiled in Nantucket Island Living. Each one is lovingly described with an attentiveness that drills down to the level of blackberry pudding when necessary to establish the context, atmosphere, and ultimately the essence of the place. This is fitting; as the author writes in the introduction, "Nantucket is more than a place - it is a state of mind".And so it is.Gorgeous photography by Terry Pommett complements the text. It's an absolute feast for the eyes. The exploration of the island takes us from the elegance and history of Town (that's what the locals call it) to windswept beach cottages, from stately seaside mansions to the gardens and the quaint village of Siasconset.Intertwined with it all is an overview of the island's history, traditions, natural life, and culture. This is a book that will be enjoyed over and over again.

A little disappointed
I have been to Nantucket many times and it's one of my favorite places. However, I was a little disappointed with this book - particularly in the choice of home interiors the author chose to feature. The home interiors in this book could be of any home anywhere in this country. They did not reflect the island, were too formal, too trendy, too modern, and frankly I felt like I was looking at a furniture store catalogue.....bland, generic, too scripted and boring. The exteriors of the houses were lovely and reflected beautiful restorations of historic homes that were lovingly cared for. However, the interiors did not relate to the houses at all. I ordered "Martha's Vineyard Houses and Gardens" at the same time and it is wonderful - exactly what I'd hoped "Nantucket Island Living" would be. Ms. Linsley should study the Martha's Vineyard book to see how to get it right. I will keep "Nantucket Island Living", as it's OK - but it won't ever be a book I keep reaching for again and again.

ACK frame of Mind
This book explored and pictured the wide range of homes people have created to cultivate their serenity on Nantucket Island. Everything from a very rustic two room beach cottage to refined homes in town...whatever your fancy...this book will provide many wonderful decorating ideas. The photography is phenomenal. The vibrant pictures makes you feel like you could walk into the page and sit on the big comfy club chair, or curl up in a bed hearing the waves lapping the shore. Reading this book provides inspiration and a mini vacation wrapped all in one.

Fantastic Coffee Table Book For Me
Book came very quickly and it has a gorgeous picture spread page after page. It is always nice to see where the "other half" frolic and play if you know what I mean:). It truly captures Nuntucket and its rich history.

Nuntucket Island Living
I had this book sent from America to Australia.Anyone interested in island living will surely love this one as much as I do.The presentation of glorious pictures plus the Nantucket story evokes a world that runs at a leisurely pace away from the madness, noise and clamour of big city life.I live on an Australian Island and love it, so seeing a portrayal of island life in America is of great interest to me.

Lectura agradable
Tal y como esperaba. Un libro de mesa de té. Lleno de fotos preciosas con un recorrido más o menos detallado de las casas más atractivas de esta zona. Muy agradable de leer y repasar. El envío a tiempo.

A true portrayal of Nantucket living
I found the book interesting as I had heard of Nantucket but not really understood the culture. It all seemed a bit bleak there really and certainly not for me.
