Case 39 [Blu-ray]

If you choose to become a foster parent to Dark Alessa, you should expect family issues
I saw a synopsis of the movie on YouTube before watching it, so I had a general idea of the plot. Honestly, knowing the story made Lily's little quirks and oddities more meaningful. The writing provides hints of what is to come during the first half of the movie without going overboard; although, it reveals too much too soon during the second half. I would have liked it more if the audience remained unsure about Lily for a longer portion of the movie.I've enjoyed Jodelle Ferland's (Lily) performances in Silent Hill, The Tall Man, and the series Dark Matter before watching this film. I think once again she did a great job bringing her character to life. The scene during which Lily and Doug (Bradley Cooper) discuss their fears is a favorite. This is one of the first times 10-year-old Lily blatantly reveals a glimpse of her true self, and it is terrifying for Doug and foreboding for the audience. Both actors performed the scene brilliantly. Btw, people who are criticizing Renee Zellweger's performance: She has used the "squishy face" expression and whispering since Jerry McGuire "had her at hello". You know what to expect from her.BIG SPOILERThe ending was lackluster. When people who have been dominated by a demon suddenly have the power to defeat the demon in 1v1 combat is cliche and unbelievable. I understand the premise that demons grow stronger off of fear, hatred, and negative emotions. However, the shift in power between Lily and Emily happened too quickly. Lily had exerted complete control over Emily throughout the movie. Then, within a few minutes, Emily's fear disappears giving her the strength to win a hand-to-hand fight with a demon. This ending gave me Game of Thrones season 8 flashbacks: a "time is running out, so let's just get it over with" feel. I wish the ending was better, but I enjoyed the movie until that point.

Just scary enough for those who don't like real horror movies.
I never used to watch the HORROR genre. For goodness sake: I'm scared of the dark & used to freak out at just "jump scares." Also, I always like my feet up and covered, whether I'm sweating to death, or not. But, as I explore the THRILLER & HORROR films I have access to, right now with no theatres open, not much scares me anymore. we're all gonna die somehow, someday. This movie reminded me why I liked "Constantine" so much. But, if you don't want to be too scared, especially if you believe in beings we can't see with our eyes...don't watch "Constantine!"This movie, however, is scary enough to give you a little thrill. You might have to sleep with the lights on...you might not sleep. But, I guarantee that everything creepy, you can see with your eyes on screen. .You just might have to say a few rosaries until you get over it. If that doesn't work, you shouldn't delve into your Catholicism too much.On the other hand, if you find yourself curious about demons, angels & the other beings I mentioned; try the film "Constantine" & a few others having to do with SIN EATERS. And, if you're a READER, I suggest "This Present Darkness" (1986), by Frank E. Peretti.

Cast and acting is good, but story isn’t what I was expecting
Everything starts well with this movie with a hard-working and well-meaning social worker seemingly saving the life of a child from abusive parents. But about midway through the script flips completely and it unexpectedly turns into a paranormal thriller, which is not a genre that’s in my preferred wheelhouse. Up until it made that extreme pivot I found this to be an intriguing movie with good actors, characters, and dialogue — then it turned into something else entirely. Ultimately it wasn’t my cuppa, but if paranormal thrillers are your thing then definitely go for it because it is a very well-done movie overall and is well worth 4 - 4.5 stars if that’s your thang.

Don't trust the average viewer's ratings.
If you see 4 stars, consider it a three at best. It's also good to see how many people rated a given film. The more the better. This film was a 3.0 or 3.5-star in my book.

That Little Girl
People are always going to have different opinions about things, and, as they say, one man's wine is another man's poison. Some people like this film, some didn't. I thought it was well done. Don't get me wrong, I've seen scarier, but Jodelle Ferland is terrifying as Lillith. I found her performance so disturbing, that even seeing photographs of her now as an adult gives me the creeps (it doesn't help that she always ends up acting in something that's either horror, supernatural, or both). The only thing that really bothered me about Case 39 is that they named the little girl "Lillith" who in mythology is the mother of all demons, but this Lillith is not. I can't believe that none of the characters connected the dots once weird and horrible things started to happen (does anyone name their child "Lillith" in real life?).I won't criticize any of the characters from not running as far away from horrors as they possibly could since that applies to most horror films. But had I been any of the characters in this movie who had to face that monstrosity, I would have left my job, home, friends, my whole life behind. I would have hopped on a plane to the other side of the planet.

Surprisingly good
I was not expecting this to be more than a typical B movie. It ended up being really good. And the girl, so sweet and innocent at first, is absolutely frightening halfway through. Sweet yet frightening at the same time at some places.

That was mean!
I liked it; it was fairly obvious where it was going minutes into the film and confirmed not long after but it was an entertaining passive ride to its conclusion. Not scary per se but the odd skin crawling or shocking moment; seeing a young girl being taped into an oven is quite a shocking scenario to witness regardless of context.Anyway as if family social work wasn't difficult enough a bit of demon is thrown into the mix. I thought Zellweger was ok, she's not the most expressive of actors but was fine though completely overshadowed by the little girl who did a great job. Some gravitas added from Ian McShane who enhances any production just by appearing on screen and Mark Lester who was a bit under utilised. There are some good set pieces and nice pieces of dialogue but it is all about establishing a growing sense of unease and characterisation. Not sure if there were plot holes or if bits were deliberately left unanswered and ambiguous but I'm not necessarily a fan of joining all the dots anyway. The extras on the disc are worth a watch. Asides from the initial back slapping one there's short extras on the various special effects. It's also worth watching some of the deleted scenes as I thought the death of one of the characters was better than the one they included in the film and I also preferred the tone of the alternate ending. It's good, it's not a hardcore horror by any standards but it's an entertaining watch if only for the performance of the young actress. Wouldn't suprise me if she's insufferable in real life though.

Case 39.
A psychological horror thriller, Case 39 apparently bombed at the box office when it was released in 2010.I found the film to be a pretty acceptable old-school horror, in many ways harking back to those of the late 70s and early 80s; there are elements from some of the classics of that era which inevitably makes it derivative, but it's by no means a bad film.A lot rests on the performance of the young Jodelle Ferland as Lillith, the child apparently in danger from her own parents, prompting social worker Emily (Renée Zellweger) to temporarily take her into her home; Ferland plays “creepy kid” quite well and the surrounding adult cast provide good support; for the most part they aren't around for long – the relationship between Lillith and Emily is the main focus right to the end of the tale.Like most movies of this genre, suspension of disbelief is a requirement on the part of the viewer – accept that and it's an entertaining enough watch. It's fairly predictable if you know how these movies work, but enjoyable nevertheless.I certainly preferred this approach to the current trend in horror flicks that rely on cheap, sudden shocks or visceral gore (devices that have a place in the art-form, but have become a bit over-used).Worth a watch; it`s no classic, but no embarrassment to it`s director and cast either. The DVD extras consist of four short behind the scenes documentaries totalling about 20 minutes (three of them highlighting special effects) and 30 minutes of deleted scenes (including an alternative ending).3 ½ stars, ideally.
