Q: Can this be mounted on metal by the magnet without screws?

Yes I have them on my toolbox holding wrenches without screws

Q: For the love of God, why don't they space the screw holes on products like this 16" apart so we don't have to use wall anchors?!

Their 24" magnetic bar has the screw holes 16" apart. I'd recommend looking into those.

I love this magnet. Yes it would work well for knives. I find many uses in the kitchen and we have 4 in our workshop.

Sure, you can cut it (maybe with a chop saw?) Magnetically it would still work as two pieces. Since it only has 2 mounting tabs (one on either end), you'll only have 1 tab per piece. You would have to drill a hole and sink a screw through the hole to mount it. I would suggest a drill press to drill the hole, as the bar is fairly narrow and you'll have to be spot on straight.
