Long John Silver's Return to Treasure Island

The best version available is indeed as the sea Captain Long John would say! Arrrre Matie!Beautifully restored to date version. Absolutely the best widescreen version available, and it doesn't disappoint at all. I feel very fortunate to have found the best quality dvd of this wonderful Byron Haskin directed film. I haven't seen said movie since I was a lad of seven. Arrrre! And for free did I see this bountiful film af the Wallace Fitchburg Public Library way back in 1971 when the neighborhood Mothers gathered theirs and neighbors children together for a chaperoned trip to entertain us on those simple days of weekends long ago. I do miss those days, however this brilliantly restored movie had, somehow, brought those feelings and memories back. This VIC version is the best quality available. Even though I'd love a restored blu-ray, I'm over the moon satisfied with the excellent quality VIC has given this legendary Long John Silver masterpiece! 100% satisfied and a must have for any serious collector of marvelous performance and movie making! I cant give it 5 stars. Must give it 10 ! Bravo to this rare out of print gem I was most very fortunate to acquire to my collection!👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍

As most will likely echo Silver is great in this as he was in treasure island but the story is a bit slow, the picture and sound quality are terrible.Yes it's an older film and you don't expect HD but this isn't just a lower resolution or grainy image this is color changes, lines randomly appearing, jerking and the audio at times sounds as though the characters are speaking in a cave.Treasure island granted was actually a disney release and this is not but do not expect even half the quality of Disney's film.The rating is higher than 1 star for silver nothing else.

I bought this as a birthday present for my husband. He loves the original movie, Treasure Island, with Robert Newton. He was so excited to get this. How disappointing to find when we opened it that the DVD was badly cracked. It is unknown if it was already like this or happened in shipping. The packaging looks like it was either beat up, stepped on or previously used. It took about a month to arrive. Now we have to wait another month for a replacement that is, hopefully, not damaged.

Robert Newton is THE guy that defined pirates on screen, much like Boris Karloff defined Frankenstein or Bela Lugosi defined Dracula.The follow up to Disney's masterpiece is lacking and recycles the first one in many ways, but if you are a fan of old movies and Robert Newton, you'll like it. Don't expect the best quality. It's an old movie transferred to DVD format, and may look weird on your bourgeois big TV.

Despite having been filmed by a non-major studio, this is a fabulous sequel to Disney's "Treasure Island".In the present form, the DVD comes out shining. Excellent restoration and vivid colors make it fully worthwhile watching.This is a 2.55:1 widescreen presentation, and as such it is presented here. No cropping of any kind (like reducing it to 1.85:1 or 2.35:1). The soundtrack is in an unbelievably clear and polished Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Stereo.VCI Entertainment (the Label of this DVD) has surpassed itself for this production and this is simply a must buy.Reprising his former role of said Long John Silver, is the brilliant Robert Newton, but the rest of the roles have been recast. Despite of it, they all do a marvelous job recreating what was left of from the previous movie and bring it back now, in these new adventures of high Sea piracy.Due to its format, this is truly a spectacular movie, with wonderful vistas and a sense of grandeur, that in today's movies is usually lacking and replaced by overblown special effects.It is not "Pirates of the Caribbeans", but still highly entertaining and amusing. Thrills are there and not artificial as the ones we get nowadays, but rather subtle in coming, and once they are there, they are truly felt.I can only recommend it.But do not forget its original predecessor. The Disney's version, although in Full Screen (as it was filmed) has to be in your collection, to be able to enjoy this one to the fullest.My urge upon you, the viewer, is to buy them both in a package, since otherwise, you may not fully understand the action contained in this sequel.But even by itself it still stands the proof of time.I like it. I hope you will too...

The original movie was CinemaScope. This one is chopped down to 4:3 aspect ratio and it appears that they've actually make the resolution worse than ever.

Surprisingly, this is the best quality I have seen for the series. This applies to all 3 Alpha DVDs. This third volume is even of a little bit better quality than the first two.Don't get me wrong, the episodes all suffer the same off-color problems as the other DVDs out there, but these are sharper and they have a bit of a richer color palate here. If you already own the episodes, it's probably not worth the price. These are OOP now and the Amazon dealers are pricing them accordingly.

The film was cut down from CinemaScope to standard so people are on edges of view. Color was good but wish they had extra wide copy available

Be warned if your looking for the Long John Silver 1954 movie as i was, don't purchase Synergy Archives Series as it is an episode of a tv series of the same name and is a very poor quality dvd and is only half an hour in length.The impression one is given when seeing the display on Amazon is that it is the film that you are purchasing,as on the cover of the dvd it boasts CinemaScope and is obviously a display advertising the cinema movie.Its true the Amazon information stated a length of 30 minutes,but failed in every other way to give an a clear description of what you are getting,and the acurate information can only be found on the back of the dvd after you have bought it as it is not displayed on Amazon,It also does not help matters when Amazon puts all the reviews together for products of a similar nature it is very confusing and is not helpful in choseing the product you wish to purchase.All in all i feel ive been ripped off.

A simply brilliant boys adventure story with Robert Newton perfectly over acting in the title role, but the quality of this transfer is poor. Spoils the enjoyment of a great pirate film that deserves 5 stars. Saying that, this is the best copy I've come across so far, so if you want this film in your collection, then this copy is possibly the best to get. Sadly though, I can only award it 3 stars.

as much as i like robert newton ,and as far as long john silver goes there is no exponent finer than r newton however the film quality and story line are weak here ,best avoided unless you are a r newton fan ( an i be tooo you land lubbers) AAARRRRRGGGGggggg

I have heard stories of this television program for many years, after watching Walt Disney's Treasure Island as a kid. Stories such as that it was filmed in Australia, it was Robert Newton's final work, and that it was the first action adventure series on television. In recnt years, I bought the movie that began the series: Long John Silver, and I was not disappointed. I was practically waiting for a chance to finally get the series on DVD.Then I saw this collection and I leaped. Watching it was a blessing, but upon further research I found that it is missing a moderate portion of the entire program. If you are looking as I did for a complete set of the series, I'm afraid that has not been granted as of yet. Bu if you are a fan of Robert Newton as the infamous pirate Long John Silver, I guarantee one hundred percent you will not be let down in obtaining this DVD set.

Really poor quality dvd. There,s a few of these under different distributors all very poor quality.This starlite one is just as bad.Nothing like the quality when its shown occasionally on tcm or movies for men.Dont waste your money.I did as i thought it may not be that bad....it is.
