Cold Kill: The True Story of a Murderous Love

True Detective Story
I was into the police side of this crazy story, the detectives had to work incredibly hard to get their work done.

Interesting
I had not heard about this case before this book. It really makes you wonder about how some people's minds work. I would have liked to have known more about Cindy's actual family life but I can guess about it.

Proof that crime doesn't pay
If there is one thing consistent with true crime books, it's that there usually aren't many likable characters. That is true about this story except for one private detective named Kim Paris, who wrangled herself into the life of a killer.David West is an ex-Marine who described himself as having two personalities. There was the kind, thoughtful, and caring David. Then there was David the soldier willing to take on anyone who got in his way. I'll call him loser one.Loser two is Cindy Ray Campbell. She is overweight, dependent on others for her survival, and has zero ambition. She is in her mid-twenties but has never had a driver's license. She has never held a real job. When David first meets Cindy Ray, he see's potential behind that shy, unkempt exterior. He encourages her to lose weight. He helps bring out her best qualities. He turns the ugly duckling into a swan. But Cindy has issues beyond her physical appearance. She claims to be the victim of incest and rape by her father.A lot of time is spent getting to know the backgrounds of these two losers. They are both so unlikable that it is hard to keep reading about their twisted relationship. But when Cindy Ray comes up with the idea to kill both her parents to receive an inheritance, things kick into high gear.Cindy is first to slip up. David does so reluctantly after falling for the seductive Kim Paris. In the end, they both get what they deserve. My only issue with the book was the author's decision to get inside the minds of his characters. Yes, it adds depth to the story, but it also crosses the line as a work of nonfiction. Even if the author spent hours talking to each individual, there's no way that he could know what someone is thinking all the time. I would also have liked some images of the people involved in this story. Lastly, the author never divulges whether or not Cindy's claims of rape and incest were true. She had a child that was supposedly fathered by her father. I would have thought that a paternity test would have put the matter to rest.

Great Story; Great Writing, But…
The only issue, really, is the method in which the narrative is told in this book. Olsen is a wonderful writer, and usually his works don’t have any hint of, ‘and then this happened and then that and now this,’ but Cold Kill has a bit of that feel. Still, as always, Jack Olsen doesn’t disappoint. He has a knack. Worth the read.

A very interesting book but...
"Cold Kill"was a very detailed and interesting book. Surprisingly the entire book was about the background of the characters, the crime itself and the very long, interesting and unique investigation. It ends with the arrest of those who committed the crime and a one paragraph epilogue tells what happened to them after their arrestsAlthough the book was very very good I could not give it 5 stars for two reasons. One, the language in the book is truly horrendous. If you are offended by foul language this is NOT a book for you!!! The other reason is that this book is truly the very worst editing job I've ever seen in any book I've ever read (thousands). I just don't understand how a book by such a well known author can go to print this way. There are probably hundreds of mistakes. I have NEVER seen so many very obvious mistakes in one book. It is pretty crazy!Would I recommend the book to others? Absolutely! However, before more are printed someone needs to edit it again !!!

I would not recommend this book only because of the typos
This story was interesting. The problem with this book was that there were so many typos it was distracting. Proofreading is not that difficult a job and it is just a shame this book was not proofread at all. In addition to all the times the punctuation was just missing it was confusing to just have no distinction between the dashes and the hyphens. Also there were no pictures and in a true-crime book I can see no reason to omit photographs which makes a true-crime book more interesting. I would not recommend this book only because of the typos. I have read other books by this author and generally enjoy them very much.

Brilliant page turner
Highly recommended by me. Never disappointed by Jack Olsen. Brilliant story teller. No wonder he's received so many awards. Deservedly so.

Compelling read
I've read other books on this case and this one provides a fast paced look at the relationship between two very different but dysfunctional people whose relationship resulted in a crime as crazy as each of them and their relationship. The book provides a telling insight into that craziness.

Gripping account of a double murder.
Colourful narrative of two life's wasted and innocent people paying the ultimate price.Jack Olsen is a maestro in creating a true crime story that keeps you engrossed. He spins and weaves along, creating vivid characters of people whom we would under normal circumstances not give a second glance. I recommend this book to anyone who is fascinated by crime and the motivation behind homicide.5 stars from me.

Olsen was a master of investigative journalism
I would usually give Jack Olsen work 5 stars. His knack of getting to the heart of the protagonists suffering is excellent. Which brings to vivid life the situation. Almost as if you're living it yourself. With cold kill her told the story in such a way you would burn the night light to finish it. Once at the last 2 chapters the book left many unanswered questions about the psychology and subsequent history of the main character Cindy. Therefore I was compelled to go onto the Internet and find out for myself- I was in essence finishing the book myself.Notwithstanding an excellent meticulously researched book.
