This Is Not To Be Compared With "Food"
Note to Amazon...You list this "grit" with "pigeon feed" as comparable product, which denotes a complete lack of understanding on your part. Pigeons, like other birds, lack the dentition of other animals and swallow their foods (largely seeds and grains) whole. They rely on a muscular gut called a gizzard, which with the help of small ingested "stones" (that's where the grit comes in) grinds their food to a digestible form.This is a tried and true variant of nature's wonderful diversity, refined and handed down from the pigeon's (and other bird's) saurian ancestors. For that's what birds are, an evolved and surviving branch of dinosauria. It is now known that extinct donosaurs such as stegosaurus and triceratops, both of which had "beaks", swallowed small stones called "gastroliths", a/k/a "gizzard stones", to aid in the digestion of the plant matter they ingested. The pigeon grit you offer serves exactly that purpose.Still, that's not to say that pigeon/bird grit doesn't impart important nutritional supplementation, such as beneficial calcium and minerals. But it's purpose is not one and the same as pigeon feed, and the two should not be offered as "comparable product".These comments are offered to assist those at Amazon to better serve their customers, and to educate those customers who are new to caring for pigeons and other birds.Best regards,RayB
