Le Creuset Salt Mill, 8" x 2 1/2", Cerise

We had different salt and pepper grinders in the past that eventually broke. I wanted something that was not plastic. We really like Le Creuset products and have always had good luck with them. I know these are pricey compared to other options, however, this is an example of you get what you pay for. The salt one “leaks” a little salt after use, but if you give it a little shake before putting it down the salt residue comes off and you can avoid any mess.

According to collective wisdom on the Internet, salt and pepper mills are not interchangeable. However, it really depends on the materials used in the grinding mechanism. I have a pair of Kyocera ceramic mills that do not specify whether they are used for salt and pepper - they appear interchangeable. The Le Creuset salt mill has a ceramic grinding mechanism inside, a small metal plate, and a sturdy plastic body. I've used my Le Creuset 8 inch salt mill for peppercorns (white and black) - it works perfectly, with a satisfying "crunch" as you grind, and even after a few years, it has not appeared to harm the mill in any way. (Would be interesting to see if the reverse is true - if one could use a pepper mill for salt - salt does corrode metal parts). The one drawback was that the Le Creuset mills are made of plastic, not wood. However, having once owned a very expensive set of wooden mills that had to be discarded because the wooden interior got musty-smelling with dampness from peppercorns and salt crystals, I think plastic is more durable and easier to keep clean.

The grinders are sharp - if you use hard salt crystals you'll appreciate the difference. Attractive classic shape, very glossy, comfortable in your hand, easy to use - very smooth mechanism. Happy with my purchase. Thank you! I was also happy I bought the cap for the bottom as the mill tends to litter.

If you’re going to buy, buy high quality. This is elegant and functional

It emitted perfectly cracked salt from the first crank, great purchase! But FYI it's important to note that the grinder body is made of plastic - - the ceramic description is in reference to the actual grinding gears. Ceramic burrs (the grinding 'teeth') are necessary to grind salt as the salt will corrode/oxidize metal burrs (that are in pepper mills) and cause rust and breakdown. The grinder body being plastic does not feel cheap to me, particularly because it grinds so well! It has nice weight, and believe it will last many years past my wood pepper shaker. Very happy!

Well built and sturdy. Exactly what I’d expect from Le Creuset. It grinds coarse salt effortlessly and feels great in hand. Unfortunately, Amazon's packaging was just a thin layer of bubble wrap and my salt mill arrived with a small chip at the base. For that reason, I'm giving it 4 stars instead of 5.
