Birds of Paradise and Bowerbirds: An Identification Guide

Every summer I research something that I know nothing about. This year...well, this book has jumpstarted my interest in Birds of Paradise and Bowerbirds. Beautiful, informative, and exciting. I am already an ambassador for these birds. I am telling everyone! Wonderful book!

Buy it for the info, if that's your thing. There's plenty of it. But I wanted it for the artwork on the color plates, and they do not disappoint. No regrets on this purchase

Beautiful plates (as always) and basically all that's known of these spectacular birds. Another coup for the Helm series and Princeton Press.

A long-awaited family guide to arguably one of the most stunning collections of avian species, lavishly illustrated and very detailed this is the most up to date and comprehensive work on this family currently available.The book opens with a list of contents and a comprehensive checklist of species and subspecies, followed by an in-depth introduction to each family covering all manner of information about birds involved. The layout of the book does just that with an ensuing glossary and list of abbreviations.The 41 plates are stunningly illustrated by Richard Allen whose work doesn’t just show the details of the plumages but also adds some background to give further life to the art. As is characteristic of these families their displays are often outrageous and amazing and most are illustrated along with male, female, juvenile and differing subspecies where relevant.Incredibly detailed species accounts come after the plates covering field identification, status and conservation, range, description, taxonomy and geographical variation, vocalizations, habitat, habits, food and foraging, breeding behaviour, moult, status and conservation. Each section given thorough coverage and detail.There are also very good and decent sized range maps and often a nice selection of photographs to accompany the text. The guide concludes with a bibliography and index.Overall, this is a magnificent work with comprehensive detail, the most up to date taxonomy and some eye candy illustrations depicting these amazing birds in stunning detail. A lot of effort and work went into this book and it’s reflected in the quality of it. A must for any bird nerd and avian enthusiast.

An amazing book but the text here needs to be corrected. The country is Papua New Guinea who became an independent country in the 1970’s. The author certainly knows that. Actually seeing these birds while there was the highlight of my visit.

wunderschönes Buch mit vielen Abbildungen und Texten über die Vögel Neuguineas

This book was written by an expert in Australia, and contains pretty much everything you need to know about these birds. While it is branded as an ID guide and certainly does an excellent job with its beautiful illustrations and pictures, it is much more than that.There is so much information about each bird, such as its behaviour and biology, that it should be a wonderful guide for anyone interested in these birds. Thus, besides birdwatchers, which are the obvious audience, scientists and naturalists should be enthralled about this book. It was written with such care and dedication by a very nice man (I met him in Australia) and expert birdwatcher and ornithologist who has a ton of experience in this area.
