Change Your Story, Change Your Life: Using Shamanic and Jungian Tools to Achieve Personal Transformation

Excellent book
I really liked how the author tied in aspects of shamanism with self-help. The book is packed with exercises and can be read leisurely, with discipline, or somewhere in between. I am so convinced with the premise of a narrative and that the narrative creates the fabric of our ability to love ourselves and heal from disease. This author told it nicely with some personal examples. For those who want to dig deeper and strengthen their understanding of their cycles, this book is a great companion on their journey.

this book is worth 10 years of therapy!
Dr. Greer is a shaman, a psychologist and an excellent writer. I can't believe no one else has thought to combine shamanism and Jungian psychology before, but the two go together perfectly. I have a degree in psychology and have been practicing shamanism for years, and I feel that this book is intelligently written and will appeal to a seasoned practitioner, but is also approachable to a complete novice. There is none of the poor spelling and grammatical errors which characterize so many new age titles put out by small publishing houses. Anyone seeking a complete life makeover, should consider purchasing this book and going through the exercises. You won't be disappointed!

a great choice.
Excellent perspective and the exercises are sensible. It is more than just reading a book to make me feel better. A book that takes time and the time depends on you. Change can be difficult for some and I am one of those who have difficulty changing. There are a few good books for changing your story but I found that this one connects better for me.Update: I purchased this book in the middle of the night. I was extremely physically ill and I was struggling with my health. I was asleep on my sofa when I woke up and felt compelled to pick up my tablet and look at facebook. I saw this ad for this book and I had no money to purchase it. Long story short, I basically got this book for free from amazon for signing up for one of their package deals. Not long after that I began in counseling. I had surgery and once the physical illness was on the mend, I was able to focus on my healing of Complex Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. I brought this book in with me and I worked with this book and worked with a Licensed Therapist and two years later, in the present, I have discovered a whole new calling in my life to advocate. If it is meant to be, I believe the opportunity to go to college to get a Master's in Psychology will happen if it is what I am really supposed to do. Life seems to work out that way. :) Thank You Carl Greer for sharing this book. Also, I want to add that my therapist is moved by the fact that I actually took the initiative to heal. (by doing the work). this book was extracurricular but it helped bridge that gap between my beliefs and mainstream techniques used by my mainstream therapist. <3

Clear the path for a restart
I don't think I realized the extent the book would change my viewpoint about my life. I'm about halfway through it, the writing exercises are extremely potent. You get what you put into them, of course, and I was ready for big changes to come into my life. Changing your story is like changing the inside viewpoint of the one who reviews your life. I'm catching lots of habitual negative assumptions and old worn pathways of how I've viewed things that have happened in my life. I'm nowhere near integrating all the new learning. I would say give yourself several months at least, if not longer, to get through this book. It's amazing. At least for me.

Re-connect, re-orient, re-write
On chapter 3 now; i am also reading Warrior Goddess Training(Amara), and just finished Gregg Braden's Secrets of the Lost Mode of Prayer ~~so i'm getting a healthy introduction to Toltec/Shamanism. Also reading The Intuitive Way by Penney Peirce.I'm interested in the various esoteric ways we humans can get in touch with our 'Higher Selves' & Source,to resonate with deep personal peaceful oneness (just finished Oneness by Rasha),and to explore the deeper meanings in life, in this Universe, in different dimensions.(I'm also reading Kaku's Parallel Worlds).I believe that this 'centering' and incorporating various techniques of accessing higher wisdom (I've just ordered some books on Akashic records)will yield new perspectives on me, my life, and "my story" and cause me to write a more positive story based on my true soul desires, and what's best for me, and more in line with success. (You Are the Placebo by Dispenza is along similar lines, but more biology-focused)...I'll update ...

the ah ha moment
I studied with Dr. Villaldo and had done shamanic work with many patients...assisting them in finding healing from deep unconscious wounds, and yet, in spite of my own deep healing while taking this two year course, I was still wounded. And I had boosted on my great healing...but then we all know...there are layers. I did wonder why painful circumstances kept repeating themselves in my life. I was on page 25 when the words and energy of this book uncovered the deep vows I had made as a child..."I will never trust.....for they will always hurt me." When I realized that the things "being done to me" were the outcome of my own unconscious expectations I saw my own "cellular computer chip" in full operation. The moment I "got it", was the moment my life changed...immediately and dramatically.Dr. Greer is so right, Change Your Story, Change Your Life.

Read is good for the most part. Book construction not so good.
The majority of the book is an excellent read and guide. The lessons in the beginning can be daunting however also beneficial to some. What disappointed the most was the pages began to come lose within the first 10 or 15 pages of the book. This alone can make it not worth the money and its difficult to hold together.... plus wondering when more pages will fall out.

A Brilliant Book
I'm really enjoying the synthesis of therapeutic and shamanic approaches to healing and personal growth (I am both a psychotherapist and a shamanic practitioner) and I haven't found many books that do bring these two worlds together. Carl brings a great deal of experience and his own inner work to explaining how to use the tools he describes. He also writes from his heart. The theme of changing our story is very important. If we keep repeating our version of our life story or significant events - and much of this might come from others perceptions, we stay stuck. A client example that illustrates this is someone who kept telling me that their partner kept telling them that they were useless, pessimistic, a burden etc. I said 'because they said x, that doesn't make it true'. That was the point when they started to make changes in their life. If you have your own stories that keep you stuck in old beliefs or you work with clients that do, this book will open your eyes to some very transformational tools. If you are new to shamanism, trust that it does work as long as you put the work in too. The book is helping me to identify some of my own stories that still need changing. In addition it's supporting me to combine these two approaches in my work. I highly recommend it

Very informing
I bought this book to understand what Shamanism is all about, I think it is similar to self-hypnosis or meditation. But there's a bit of ritual added into the practice which I like very much. I think it makes sense to add some rituals to my routine practice of energy healing and connecting with my HIGHER SELF through self-meditation. Thank you for writing and sharing these lost information.

genial
für mich genial, da er die Verbinung zwischen der Psychologie von C. Jung und dem modernen Schamanismus hinbekommt. Einfach genial

Loved it.
Loved the intro to Jungian analysis and some of the tools, and comparisons with shamanism. Gained lots of insight and enough practical tools to play with for a good while. Really felt the heart and soul of the author, beautiful integrity and commitment.

Powerful
Wonderful book. I took a one week "home" retreat where I read the book and did all the exercises recommended. I found that my life was impacted profoundly by it and I felt a sense of peace and lightness come in. What a way to instigate growth and let go that which is of no use any longer.
