Broadleaf deciduous tree, to about 25 ft (7.6 m) tall and wide, open and airy crown, spreading, twiggy, long slender branches which tend to droop. Bark is attractive, smooth, reddish-brown, marked with horizontal lenticels. Leaves simple, alternate, to about 14 cm long, lightly hairy on both sides, margin has fine, sharp teeth, dark green; fall color may be orange/yellow. Flowers dark pink in bud, opening to a soft pink, semi-double (12-15 petals), about 30-40 mm wide, 2-4 per drooping cluster, often on the end of thin, bare branches; bloom occur in early spring before leaves appear; usually fruitless.
