A Slight Disturbance In My Mind ~ The British Proto-Psychedelic Sounds Of 1966

Another great compilation
This is the fifth of these Grapefruit box sets I have bought. It covers 1966 (the others having covered 1967-1970). It's possibly the best of the lot. As always the notes in the booklet by David Wells are fascinating. My favourite bit is "Irrespective of whether you consider the four hours of dizzying, genre busting music spread across our anthology to be motivated by the doors of perception or the window of opportunity, "A Slight Disturbance In My Mind" is the sound of British pop storming the gates of a new, strange and wonderful dawn." I like to listen to the music while reading the notes and also having Wikipedia to hand to see what happened to bands like The Smoke whose "My Friend Jack" opens Disc 2. Did you know that the bass guitarist with The Smoke was John "Zeke" Lund who became a sound engineer for Boney M - who went on to record "My Friend Jack" themselves. Fascinating.

That Pivotal Year 1966 Proto Psychedelia
This lavishly illustrated 3 CD various artists box set catalogues the very best of what is termed British Proto-Psychedelia (also known as freak beat since the term was coined in the mid 1980s).The influential Rubber Soul album released at the end of 1965 and the use of sitar in the Kinks See My Friends seems to have (along with Timothy Leary's box of magic tricks), pedals fuzztone/wah-wah, improved production sounds (and many more influences) spurned this very exciting transitional sound throughout 1966.The one guitar solo that encapsulates this sound is Jeff Becks in The Yardbirds Shapes of Things. If ever there was a guitar break that sparked a change in popular music... this was it for me. This is sandwiched between two other classic tracks from this period in the opening tracks of Disc 1. The Creation - Making Time and the George Martin's Produced The Action- I'll keep holding on. And just when you recovered from that Track 4 Fleur-De-Lys "Mud in your eye" blows your mind. One of many great underrated groups from this period. The quality of sound is great and there is a great accompanying booklet. There is a comparable genre (Acid Punk Volume 3 Pebbles) in the states when garage punk turns on to acid creating some of the most creative primitive sounds known in rock music "Love at Psychedelic Velocity" by the Human Expression, The Oxford Circle.."Foolish Woman".… equally brilliant. The British sounds are a little more polished but just as creative.Anyway 84 tracks including (yes US) The Misunderstood - another lost Gem "I Unseen", The 5am event - "Hungry"- Another memorable 66 sound. The list of established (Hollies, Zombies, Searchers) and soon to be superstars (Rod Stewart, Marc Bolan, David Bowie, Bee Gees, The N Betweens (proto Slade) that embraced this genre are all on these CDs.Most of the classic Freakbeat 1966 stuff is on here. most notably the brilliant Wimple Winch - Save my SoulI could go on. I really think anyone wanting to form a rock band should listen to this stuff - it is truly inspiring and exciting. And what is more some of the Kim Fowley produced demos have finally found release here.It was much needed and Grapefruit have deliveredBuy Buy and Play Loud

WOW GRAPEFRUIT TAKES US BACK FURTHER AND NOT ONTO 1971 AS I DID NOT PREDICT
i have bought the last 3 volumes of this series garpefruit has released over the past 2 years and i thought 1971 might be up next but i was wrong, anyway they took us back to 1966 instead wich was a very good year but the whole psyche explosion was more in 67 when it peaked then 66, regardless i have to give this 5 stars as there are some fantastic tracks here by some of the usual favorites from back then like THE ACTION, THE CREATION, FLEUR DE LYS, KATCH 22, THE SMOKE ( this demo version of my friend jack is great!!) THE ARTWOODS, WIMPLE WINCH and so many others, a lot of these tracks are the earliest recordings by these artists, i feel this set is more a mix of what was starting to happen with psyche in the uk coming up very fast at the time and the whole MOD scene phasing out a bit so unlike the last 3 editions this is more of a mix of both, as with all grapefruit releases the remastering on all 3 cds sound great!! you will really like the booklet as usual and now i am at a loss for where the label will take us next back to 65 w/ the beat & mod scene or onto 1971..... im looking foward to finding out!!!
