Good-quality second full-length album from K-pop’s best vocal group
Billboard recently declared Mamamoo’s first full-length K-pop album, 2016’s ‘Melting’, one of the ten-best of the last decade. ‘Reality in Black’ maintains this quality and follows on from the set of 4 Colors/Seasons mini-albums of the previous 18 months. Those familiar with Mamamoo have probably already secured their copy and need not read any further. On the other hand, anyone new to the group stands on the verge of a journey of joyful discovery. These four delightful young women, two of them still teenagers at the time, burst fully-formed onto the K-pop scene in 2014 and have just grown in stature since. 2019 saw them deservedly elevated, almost literally, to the realms of K-pop royalty as they won Korean TV’s ‘Queendom’ contest for girl groups, thanks in no small part to their closing performance of the opening track of this album, Destiny, a cowboy-themed mini-epic, apparently written in haste for the programme but benefitting from the resulting dynamism (check out the performance on YouTube, together with the song's equally compelling second outing at the 2019 VLIVE Awards). The album is front-loaded with the strongest tracks, such as its signature tune HIP, a slinky R&B groove that has been a huge hit in Korea and beyond, and 4x4ever, an arms-in-the-air anthem, but thanks to their remarkable individual voices, fabulous harmonizations and collective musicality it is only the final track that sounds like the standard K-pop filler that makes up the majority of most K-pop albums; the preceding track, the funky High Tension, would have been a much stronger finale. Mamamoo’s greatest strength, however, is in live performance, where their infectious enjoyment, effortless musicianship and famously beagle-like enthusiasm, together with the sure touch of their record company, place them in a different league to others in the highly curated, pressured and somewhat troubling K-pop industry (two of their close peers have tragically committed suicide in recent months). Reality in Black only provides a taste of Mamamoo’s talent and I strongly recommend anyone remotely interested in the state of 21st-century pop music tracks down (on YT) some of their many live performances (particularly those on Korean TV’s Sketchbook and Immortal Songs): I don’t think you will regret it, and may even find yourself swelling the ever-growing ranks of the Moomoos (their devoted, super-polite and predominantly female fanbase). Be warned, though, ‘stanning’ Mamamoo can be highly addictive (yes, I confess, I have succumbed).P.S. For a survey of their previous work, I recommend two releases, both with accompanying DVDs: the special Asian edition of the ‘Purple’ EP (ASIN: B07L2K12PL), which includes remastered versions of their earliest hits, and the Japanese ‘4colors’ retrospective (ASIN: B07SQBXNJK), which collects together some of the most significant parts of the 4 Colors/Seasons mini-albums project, albeit in Japanese versions. Only the latter is listed on Amazon UK (the former is on Amazon Japan) where availability is next-to-zero; however, at time of writing both can still be procured through a well-known auction site.
