A man that has been painted with a hateful brush
I was really expecting something different with a lot of child murders and animal sacrifices but I found this book to be very interesting about a very interesting man who is totally different from what what people making out to be he is not mean and horrible and dangerous like I thought he would be

Great History
Great history explaining how Satan first was pictured with horns from the Nord's winged helmets who did not convert to the Church. Also where the concept of Hell came from the Jewish word for eternal sleep. Great references in the back for a further study of where the concept of the Devil and Hell began.

Don't agree with the Lao Tzu crap. Show me that proof
The fact the Finders group was brushed off was quite astounding. Might suggest the author research a bit deeper. They may not be satanic, but they are ritualistic and they are extremely strange. Their leader, now dead, has a very long intelligence print and this was a program that went into very specific focus, namely children. Don't agree with the Lao Tzu crap. Show me that proof! I don't think you automatically assume this is a group following some type of philosophical bent because the leader has a picture on a wall.

Five Stars
Very scholarly work from an unbiased and factual source. Written without an agenda on religion.

An excellent look at contemporary American Satanism.
As a High Priest of the Wiccan religion, I read the cover with some trepidation - was this going to be another re-hash, trashing my religion?' Thankfully, the answer was a resounding "NO!"Mr. Lyons, in the first few pages of the book, immediately put my fears to rest, as he describes thedifferences between the Goddess-worshipping, Earth-centered spirituality of the Wiccan religion andthe beliefs and practises of Satanism today, "as they themselves define it." Re-assured, I immediatelyread on, and was impressed by not only his scholarship, but his general neutrality in writing about thisreligious movement. Several chapters are devoted to the development of the concept of 'the Devil', andits rise in popularity from the Middle Ages to the present. One chapter that was especially well-thought outwas the "Urban Legends" chapter, detailing several instances of 'ritual abuse' that had made headlines inrecent years. Although somewhat dated now, this is one book that I feel does the subject justice, and is both entertainingand well-researched.

Essential to understanding the true nature of Satanism
This book belongs on the shelf next to LaVey's Satanic Bible, for it puts Satanism in more of a historic and modern context. The chapter on heavy metal was particulary interesting. While the public's "fear" of this type of stuff has abated during the 1990s, this book remains a must-read.
