We have a lot of HO scale track from a set that's over 20 years old. Will older track work together with this newer "EZ track"? Are they compatible?

Older regular HO track will need to be raised slightly to work correctly with EZ track. You csn use HO foam road bed to make the older track the same height since EZ track has a built in road bed.

my train is starting to slow down. do I need to clean the interior of the train? if so what kind of screwdriver do I need?

Dirty track is the more likely culprit. Clean with a damp rag, or use a cleaner sold in a hobby store. I would not recommend opening the engine. These parts are small and fragile, and easily damaged. I would take it into a hobby store, or return to Bachmann for service or replacememt,
