are these suitable for 12 volt automotive applications, with less than 3 amp draw?

The data sheet for these shows 100V reverse blocking and 5A forward current. Reading between the lines, the 5A apperas to me to be a "peddling downhill with wind at my back" figure, however using at 3A or less in free air should be 100% Ok on 12V applications.
