Good book so far.
So far it is interesting and the stories of a far away time. But they reveal the character of a people and place.

Charming book
I loved the language and stories in this book. It was delightful to be reading history one second and then jumping into a faerie tale. Skye is imbued with the magic of storytelling, which is what we humans seem to do best.

Like a tour guide to Skye, but outdated.
Much information about the Isle of Skye, its roads, scenery, castles and lochs with legends about many of them. Would have been better if I could have been in Skye at the time it was written (before 1961); I would have been able to see the places described.

Excellent tour of stories and history intertwined. Particularly nice with a wee dram of Talisker.

Very thorough. Need to know more about the location ...
Very thorough. Need to know more about the location of places on the island while reading. Also, need to read in small chunks.

I bought this book for a friend as I had read it before. It is really interesting - a trip around Skye looking into all the myths and legends associated with all the places you visit, together with some history, local and national and portraits of some of the people. I thought it was a great book and would highly recommend it to anyone interested in Skye and the West Highlands in general.

This book is witty and informed. I'm happy to have a sense of where some of my family came from.

This is definitely the best book that I've read about Skye's history. Very interesting. If you're thinking of going to the island then I'd suggest reading it. It doesn't tell you places to visit like a usual book, Otta Swire talks about fairies and monsters that supposedly inhabited the island.

They say the tour guides read this when they plan to tour Skye. Some interesting stories - I liked the spinning sheep and the woman who ate her own children. Worth a read!
