the Threading on the broom handle is different that the threading on the handle. Does S&W make a shaft specific to this product?

These S&W DO NOT FIT STANDARD BROOM HANDLES that are available in the USA. I ordered 2 S&W spears and bought 2 different USA "standard availabilty" broom handles at Home Depot, one wood and one metal. Tried to screw them on and the spears did not fit either broomstick, both spears were loose. I have ordered the SOG branded version of this spear in the past and they fit perfectly. Would have ordered them again but they are back-ordered on Amazon (SOG Spirit Fixed Blade / Spear FS01N-CP). The handle on the S&W is 3/4" shorter, doesn't matter if you're using it for just the very versatile spear point these should be, blades are the same length. The S&W blade does not have barbs and does have a long cut out to save weight which are both improvements over the SOG but neither feature is actually beneficial since the S&W spear DOES NOT FIT standard broomsticks.

Is the top part of knife, the part with the blade, metal or plastic?

This knife has a blade made from metal, sharpened on one edge only and is mounted to the handle by forming the plastic around a short hidden tang. The unsharpened edge can be easily worked into a sharp edge with a fine bastard or double bastard file in an hour or so then honed to razor sharpness. The knife handle screws apart for easy mounting on any type of broomstick, extendable paint handle or other type of extension that has a screw that will fit the socket. If you are one of those folks that has a high end walking stick with the screw that will work on the socket, you would have a very handy defensive weapon available to you on short notice. The sheath is of standard quality with what someone would expect from a low cost knife, but a leather sheath can be crafted with a basic knowledge of leatherwork. I hope this answered your question. Oh, btw, I personally own two as of this writing.

Other than a normal broom handle, what else could be used?

Im not sure if anything else could be used. I took a wooden broomstick sanded it smooth and painted it black. It looks pretty awesome when its given a few coates of paint
