Interesting novel, albeit written years ago.
Interesting novel. Some embellishments weren't necessary, but a good read.

Lost Never Found
This fiction/non-fiction was well-written. At times I felt as if I were inside of Marilyn's/Norma Jeane's head, full of confusion, mental illness, drugs, love, lust, and a lack of identity. Her story was sad from the start all the way through to the end, with little pieces of happiness thrown in. It made me think how important it is to have some stability during the early childhood years that can carry us through to adulthood. She never had that to begin with. She was so used up by everyone, wanting to please and be loved, but never had a true sense of self. She claimed that nobody knew her, but I feel that she never knew herself. Sad, but a good, long read.

Fan-bloody-tastic!
This book is one of the most heart-wrenching novels I have ever read. I had never seen any of MM's movies, and knew basically nothing about her before reading this book... afterward, I went out and rented everything. There is something so empathetic and real about Oates' Marilyn... she's just a normal girl who got caught up in something much bigger than herself. Maybe it's not a good sign for my own sanity that I understood the way Monroe thought, talked, and phrased things. But this book truly brought me closer to this lovely, tragic, modern-day royalty than I ever would have dreamed possible. If you read one book, read this one. It is a powerful, moving testiment to a 1950's woman in a man's world.

Historical fiction but realistic and believable.
It's a long book, but it gives a lot of insight to Marilyn's life. I think it's nice that it's written from a women's perspective.

A city built on sand
not a 'biography' rather United States Social and Political history during the Communist witch-hunt McCarthy years provide a backdrop to the corruption and moral turpitude prevalent in the hey-day of the Hollywood studio system. A must read.

review
The book arrived promptly, and in good condition. I bought the book for a class I'm taking. I didn't like the book that much as I'm not that interested in every intimate detail about Marilyn Monroe, but that''s not your fault.

Very, very graphic!
I have always loved Joyce Carol Oates and she does tend to write that way. But I had to quit reading this one half way through, it was just too much for me. Depends on your tastes and I've read a lot of books that were "straight up" but this one Is something is, maybe I should have seen the movie instead. Actually I don't see how they could have included everything in a movie.
