Damar varnish is still the best for a true, even gloss protection on oil paintings.
Unlike the newer sythetic (alkyd) varnishes, Damar is still my preferred varnish for a slighly viscous, high gloss finish that sets up quickly and has a very even coating. Yes, Damar will slighly turn a hint of brown given enough time, but its an even tone that can barely be seen in the whites, and even, for some, enhances the painting. I tried using some of the more modern solutions and they tend to go on in a patchy manner, sometimes resisting the painted surface, which requires 2-3 coats to cover. Damar is high-gloss in one pass and because it sinks in better, it gives a richer appearance, the colors look cleaner and the darks look deeper.Winsor and Newton always make excellent products, although a little pricier, its worth it.

It works fine.
I have been using the Grumbacher matte finishing spray I don't seem to find it anywhere right now. So I tried Winsor & Newton (a very old firm) and although when I sprayed it the smell wasn't nice it went away and the end result was quite satisfactory.

Be sure to air well
Varnish goes on well and comes off easily. Better to let it dry before removing it or risk removing paint from the art. Perfect completing oil paintings. Be sure to keep it well aired as this is drying or can be toxic to breath a bit.

Great varnish for first-timers
I have been painting for a few years but recently decided to look into a varnish as I was making a painting as a gift and wanted it to be protected. There were so many options, but I opted for the spray rather than one you paint over your finished work, mostly because it seemed easier, quicker and less work. The directions say to lay your work flat and spray over it, but sometimes a few drops would fall from the can onto the painting leaving big droplets. Luckily I noticed before it fully dried. I would then spray my paintings while slanted against something, in this case, I used a cooler. The smell is VERY strong so I recommend spraying outside your house. I would spray my paintings in my yard and I would leave them there for a few minutes. The smell does linger on your paintings for a while, but it eventually goes away. I didn't want my paintings to be very shiny or very matte so I got the satin spray and I'm so glad I did. I feel like it enhanced my paintings while still leaving a natural look.

Works Beautifully
Quality product, dries fast (especially with hair dryer), great matte finish. Just be sure you stir it well to mix up any settling at the bottom or it may dry sticky. If it does, simply mix better and re-apply. Do not apply on a rainy day or may trap moisture and fog. Been using this product for decades and love it! Highly recommend - not just for oils and watercolor paintings but also miniature figurines. Knocks the shine of spray sealers right down!

Excellent!
I’ve used several other brands of mat varnish for wargame figures and have always been frustrated with their inconsistent finish and quality. I purchased the Windsor Newton product based on reviews and I am extremely happy. It is a true mat. I highly recommend this product!
