Loved
I loved this book. It was very entertaining as well as educational. The descriptions made me feel like I was there and I've never been to New York. It felt like a treat to get real insight and not the retelling many yrs later by someone who wasn't there. Bumpy Johnson was definitely a person who embodied duality. It seemed you either loved or hated him but you had to respect him. I am so happy MaymeJohnson got the chance to set the record straight on her husband. She knew who her husband was the good and the bad. And she didn't shy away from the bad.

Glad to read this directly from Bumpy’s wife!
After watching the series Godfather of Harlem, I was interested in each of the real life characters. The show gives a very mehhh version of Mayme but after looking her up I saw that she really was quite a lady! Her story if Bumpy and her experience is much more detailed and I prefer her words over Hollywood any day! Great read and worth the buy!

Good book, but the forward started off with a false narrative
Book was great and it was nice to hear most of the true story. The Forward was disgusting and his attempt to state that no one highlights a gangster outside of white gangsters is pathetic. He needs an educate on Hollywood made gangster movies and series.

Really Great and Sobering Story
I really enjoyed reading this book I didn't want to put it down it was never boring and I was amazed how Mr. Bumpy Johnson rose from an unknown street thug to the renowned Godfather of Harlem. There are so many that don't believe who Bumpy Johnson was, but I know family members (an great aunt who is still alive at 98) that migrated to Harlem from Georgia in the 30's and 40's that knew him in passing and what he was, they whispered about him with awe. Frank Lucas story of his life is a fairy tale even the detective that arrested him said he was a liar and a snitch.Bumpy Johnson was no snitch and nobody's flunky or henchman. Bumpy Johnson was who he was......a Gangster, he made no excuses for that but he did it his way. I wished he could have used that same talent and energy for a more respectable profession but he used what was given to him at the time, and of all the old gangsters of his time he was the last man standing. I would highly recommend this book if you are interested in the Real black gangsters of Harlem. Frank Lucas ain't it.

Excellent book couldn't put it down
I really loved the book the only problem I had it was to short. I read numerous books on the Italian mafia. But never came away feeling sentimental towards any criminal like I did towards Bumpy. Now I'm not advocating any criminal or criminal behavior but the storyline did it for me. But remember like any criminal or Robin Hood type there is always a hypocritical side to the man, they still kill and steal and commit unrighteous and immoral acts. And that can't be excused.or justified.

Great Read!
I enjoyed reading this book. Over the years I’ve heard about the legend of Bumpy Johnson. Recently a tv show about his life came out and intrigued me even more, so I decided to search for a book about his life. Who better to tell his story than someone who was with him through thick and thin. It wasn’t exactly a traditional read, but I really enjoyed her authentic delivery. For those publishers who don’t think people want to hear about the life and times of Bumpy Johnson, you are incorrect in your assumptions. I’m glad Mrs. Johnson was able to tell his story before she passed and thank you to Mrs. Miller for making it all happen.

Learn Your History
Bumpy Johnson definitely had an interesting life. This is a good read after watching the Godfather of Harlem series. Would be four stars if not for the grammatical errors.

Interesting and immensely entertaining!
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book! It was fantastic! Watching a TV series on the StarzPlay channel on Amazon Prime Video called "Godfather Of Harlem" starring Forest Whitaker as Ellsworth "Bumpy" Johnson inspired me to try out this book.I enjoyed the show very much and thought it was great. I did however like the book better (the series is not a basis for it) as I felt there was more stories, events and people with an association to Bumpy Johnson to learn of. If you're interested in the history of gangsters, their families and life stories I'd certainly recommend you to read this.
