Interesting Book, but the body alignment exercises made me feel worse!
I was diagnosed with scoliosis in junior high. I did not wear a brace or seek chiropractic treatment. My scoliosis has become worse over time. I do a good job of hiding it, but the disfigurement is noticeable and my back does hurt a lot.I've always been a big exerciser. I'm now in my early 40's and I switch up the following activities 6-7 days a week for an average of 1 1/2 - 3 total hours a day: walking, boot camp DVDs, cardio, recumbent biking, light weight training, yoga, Pilates, basic exercises and stretches.I tried a lot of the body balancing exercises in this book, and most of the ab exercises. I could do all of the ab exercises without pain even though I can't pass all the plank tests and I wasn't sore the following day. But, the next day I tried the body balancing exercises along with the plank tests and the first half of Dr. Lau's body alignment exercises with the ball. The pelvic exercises are something I've never done before. They did feel a little awkward and my muscles felt tight performing them. It didn't feel great but I kept going to 20 reps. The next day I was in a lot of pain. My head, neck, spine, core, hips and pelvis were all sore and hurt quite a bit. As I mentioned above, I am very active so I was really surprised at how these body alignment exercises completely unaligned my body. I feel better today, but am still more out of alignment than I usually am and it's all from the body alignment exercises.I found the nutrition section about metabolic typing interesting, but I'm not sure if it is relevant to healing back pain. With that said, I cannot recommend this book for anything other than an interesting read about the possible factors that cause scoliosis.Everything else seems unproven, and in my case the exercises were not helpful.

Not worth reading
I am disappointed in this book as it does not give any information that cannot already be found free on the internet. More than half of the book is about nutrition and general health, not about scoliosis. The rest of the book is about various exercises to strengthen the back muscles. There are simple diagrams accompanying each exercise to make the instructions clearer. However, I think it is far better to watch a video if you want to do exercises to treat your Scoliosis. The book is peppered liberally with accolades from Mr. Lau's patients, thanking and praising him for the wonderful results after receiving treatment from him. Mr. Lau is definitely not shy about promoting his practice. Also, the text of the book is double-line spaced, so even though it has 350 pages, it would only be about 180 pages or so, if the words are single-lined like most American books. I have read many Scoliosis book; this book is by far the worst I have read. Personally, I am puzzled why so many people on Amazon gave this book such a good review. If you want to know more about Scoliosis just go to the National Scoliosis Foundation forum on the internet. Save your money, don't buy this expensive book.

disappointed
I thought this book would have a good mix of yoga moves and advise. It was 99% diet and nutrition and 1% exercise. There were no yoga moves I didn't already know. Especially since there were only about 10-15 moves in the whole book! Plus the moves were mostly on an exercise ball. A bolster is much safer for scoliosis patients in case of falls. Depending on your age you probably also have osteoporosis with the scoliosis and falling off an exercise ball isn't a great idea.

Outstanding!!
Wow. I can't believe how easy this book was to read and follow. The photos and tables make it simple to be sure you're doing the exercises the right way, which is so important when you're correcting your scoliosis. The text covers the optimal diet for spinal health, good moves/bad moves for everyday activities, and strategic exercises for long term improvement. The really great thing about this book is that is was written by a Chiropractor Dr Kevin Lau with real hands on experience in working with people with scoliosis, so you know the recommendations and exercise program are sound. The companion exercise DVD really helps me follow the proper technique. I highly recommend it!

Health in your hands, a great help in treatment and prevention of scoliosis
There are few books to be found about scoliosis and treatment of this disease. We knew little about it.The book has good and clear ideas and good information about the scolioses treatment, they are practical and good to follow. It is a great help if you want to do more for patients My interest for the book is also out of curiosity. I am an acupuncturist, and practice traditional chinese medicineMy daughter is 14 years old and has severe cobangles of 70% and 49%. We chose for a non operative treatment.. This book gives very good suggestions for food, life style, training and activities. I will recommend it to everyone who needs to know about scoliosis. We are now in a treatment program for 4 weeks where she makes progress at the scolioses care clinic in the Netherlands.

Insightfull Reading
I recommend this book with everything I have. This isn't just another book on scoliosis written by a chiropractor for other chiropractors, no, this is a book written for people who suffer from scoliosis or simply want to find out some more about the condition. My husband who is a qualified chiropractor kept going on at me to read it and when I started I couldn't put it down. I never thought I would find scoliosis so fascinating but Health In Your Hands is written in such a way is hard not to. A must have.

Health In Your Hands: Your Plan for Natural Scoliosis Prevention and Treatment (Paperback)
I would have liked to see more on the history of scoliosis covered however there was enough there to give a basic background. It's obvious that the author feels passionately about his work, including diagrams as well as graphs and informative writing to bring home the full make up of scoliosis. Good all round book recommended for anyone who is new to the condition or just wants to further their understanding.

Was expecting more
Something is wrong with this book. I really like Dr Lau Facebook page. I was expecting more from a book that dense (not have to search the internet anymore to manage chronic pain). I was mistaken.I only applied the advice about exercises. After a while, it got repetitive, In this age, I can easily find exercises on YouTube. There was an interesting bit about the importance of diet (as in food is medecine). It only confirmed what I had always suspected.Nothing revolutionary for me.Not worth the money I spent.

An awesome, thorough resource with some very useful and surprising information, for example lots of nutrition stuff. Makes sense that our nutrition contributes to our bones. Great read!
