It is a quilt. Beautiful but light weight. Mine has held up well after many washings.

Yes, the quilt is 100% cotton, including the batting.

Q: Do the shams fit thick king size pillows?

Thank you for your question. The shams for a KING size set is 20"H x 36"W. Shams for a QUEEN size is 20"H x 26"W. So the shams would be bigger for a KING set. Q: Did the quilt soften up after washing?

I have washed and dried this quilt set 2 times and I believe that it is softer. Because it is 100% cotton, I imagine it will get softer the more it is washed. It does wash well and I have not experienced any shrinking. Sorry I can't be more definite!
