Great design, should have caps
It's a great accessory, but should include caps. This way you can have one side open, and the rest closed off. My main use is for external power - not better audio. If I could cap off the ends I don't need open, or if they provided rubber caps that you could cut openings in, this would be much more versatile. When I first saw the photo, I thought there WAS a gasket on one end, complete with rubber ferrules to slide connectors into.I need to provide external power using a variety of packs - rain and snow is a concern. I'll either make some type of caps myself, or purchase a regular housing and drill a hole for the external power. I need this to run 4, 6, or 8 hours shooting lapse images - and don't want to worry about the weather! The battery pack would die way too sign - especially in mid-winter.So either way, I need to modify the housing. See my photos of the Gorilla Tape modified housing. I use Gorilla tape because it sticks much better than regular duct tape.

Useful item in protected use.
This is what you need to protect the camera lens while on the desk downloading videos ect due to the exposed lens just waiting to be scratched. It may be used in dry/protected areas but for rain or dirt you need the dry OEM case.I am using this case also as a test unit to add a 37 mm step up ring [to 52mm] so that I can add filters [ cpl/uvA] It seems that the lens outside dimension is 37 mm so even though the lens is not threaded it should be possible to lightly file out the 37 mm ring to fit flush on the case and be carefully glued down. Then a 52 mm filter should fit.It needs 7 mm's to clear the protruding lens.It may take a second 37 mm ring to get the clearance[ Installed first].A cheap 37mm uva with the glass removed should work.Good luck.Just a follow up, this worked well,no filing was necessary it fit on the front ring and raised the ring up to the proper height. Now I am currently upgrading the Original dry case to accept the 52mm filters. No vignetting on the corners. Pro should add a thread ring to the lens to allow filters.Seems doable to me.

Great Item but don't buy from 24SevenBargain!
I ordered the skeleton housing for my GoPro Hero 2 so I can do dashcam videos and I ordered it through Amazon from " 24SevenBargain" and when I recieved the item it was in a brown box labeled as "new skeleton housing" and when I opened the box, it was just a regular watertight housing..not the skeleton one, apart from that..it looked as if it was used..had ton of scratches and I paid $37 for it. What a mistake that was.I tried to return it to Amazon using their "Return Center" and it said I couldn't return that particular item...so I ended up contacting customer service, told them about the problem and they were glad to refund me and even pay to ship the wrong item back.I gave this 5 stars because it wasn't Amazon's fault and they helped me out.I ended up ordering the skeleton housing through GoPro and what do I know? It was only $29.99.So words of advice..order through Amazon LLC. or through a reputable dealer. I said this before and I still made the mistake..its hard to notice sometimes.

The right case when your no where near the elements.
90% of the time, my GoPro Hero 2 rests it's feet inside this case. I mainly bought this case to allow access to the USB Charging slot while it's mounted to my windshield and connected to my cigarette socket for full time powering. One of the greatest features of this case is the ability to record clearer audio with the built in microphone. No longer will you hear that awful plastic chunky-chingy-thunking sound that the underwater cases are prone to causing. The case is solid, is opened on both left and right sides and has all button functions that the OEM case has. Definitely recommend this to any looking to access GoPro's USB, Audio, Video and SD slots without having to remove it from it's casing every time. Just remember that this case isn't full protective so don't use it in any areas that would ruin your camera: Water, Mud, dirt, etc.

Essential for External Cables
Face it, the GoPro Hero 2 has a crappy microphone. And for long road trips, the battery life is terrble. The solution? The Skeleton Housing so you can access the camera's inputs. With a pro level wireless microphone kit I'm able to get usable audio vs. the garbage underwater muddy sound the built in mic delivers. You probably don't need a pro level microphone but I own one already and it works well. If you have the latest firmware with ProTune (Hero2) audio is better in non-pro tune modes. It's a shame there isn't a 24p mode in non-pro tune modes. The Skeleton Housing also allows you to use your car battery (with the GoPro Auto Charger) instead of the OEM battery. Memory card access and video output is also made possible. The only issue I had with it was the black clamp (or whatever it's called). After only a handful of uses it is making a weird noise...as if I broke something. Hopefully that's not the case but we'll see...

Almost perfect
Ok, so if you're like me and you bought the gopro mainly to use in auto racing or outdoor activity use, then you would expect the gopro not only to capture great video, but also great sound. Not the case if you are using the stock housing that comes with the gopro. The skeleton housing is a must-buy for any gopro to get better sound. This particular skeleton housing would have been perfect if they included something to control high-wind noise such as when the gopro is mounted on a car or any other fast moving object. I have seen some items on Amazon that does that and gopro should have already included that with this skeleton. But other than that, the item does it job in creating better sound for your footage and also easy access to ports and cooling capabilities.

Warning! NOT for GoPro 3
I bought this genuine GoPro HD Skeleton Housing for my GoPro 3 so that I could add an external microphone and also charge the battery without taking the camera out of the housing each time. The housing arrived in a few days and all was going swimmingly until I tried to fit my GoPro HD 3 camera into the housing - the camera's just a bit too large to fit.The penny dropped that all GoPro 3 housings have a *square* window; earlier camera versions have a *round* porthole (look at the picture).I felt pretty stupid for not spotting this beforehand but wished the Amazon description had very clearly pointed out that this housing is ONLY suitable for versions 1 and 2 of the camera, but not version 3. I tried to get Amazon to put '(Not for GoPro HD3)' in their product title but they said they couldn't because it didn't follow their guidelines for the wording of titles.Credit to Amazon, they took the unused housing back and refunded me completely immediately (on the condition that if anything is wrong with the returned item, then they will bill me again).I then couldn't find, on Amazon, a skeleton housing suitable for my camera (maybe you can now), so I had to buy one online from a cyclist's shop, SingleTrack Bikes (be prepared: 45 pounds!).For information, if you also wish to add an external microphone and also charge the battery without taking the camera out of the housing, then you will need a unique GoPro accessory called a Combo Cable which I had to buy from yet another cyclist's shop (Evans Bikes) for 27 pounds. The cable also gives composite video output (via the old RCA red/white/yellow connectors, so not HD). Overall a pretty expensive initial outlay but it's versatile and a one-off purchase.Bear in mind, the skeleton housing makes the camera NOT waterproof or dustproof but does help with cooling. The battery and camera electronics reach 50 degrees C during an hour of non-stop video recording.Learn from my mistake regarding the housing!

Just what you need inside the car
While GoPro is not the best camera inside the car, when you have one, why not to use it? Then this casing comes handy, as it allows you to recharge the camera while using it. It also allows to change memory card without pulling the camera out of the casing. It has GoPro quality - and obviously also GoPro price that made me think thrice if I buy it. But it delivers.

Very handy
Convenient access to the GoPro charging, microphone and memory card slots without the hassle of removing the camera every time. The sound inside the car is a little better but an external microphone is going to be required if you want decent sounding audio.
