It is 1729 in pre-revolution France, a time when the aristocracy has all the power and the means to rule the country. As a wealthy, well-educated aristocrat, you have travelled the world and had the fortune to enjoy your life to the fullest – but you see that history is about to change course and you know that in order to stay strong, your family must prepare well. You need to find new allies. You must absorb smaller families and use their potency to strengthen your kin. You have to arrange wise marriages, nurture strong connections at court, obtain titles, build mansions, and find the right spouses for your daughters and sons... The Legacy: Testament of Duke de Crecy enables you to build a powerful dynasty in 18th century France as you step into the shoes of a French noble and compete for lasting honor. Over three generations, you – a resourceful patriarch or matriarch – will attempt to create a lasting legacy by establishing a house with ties to many different wealthy and powerful families from France and abroad (Spain, Italy, Russia and other countries). This card game offers endless possibilities. Each time you build a family, you write a unique story, bringing to life the diverse relationships between parents and their children, between cousins, uncles, aunts, nephews and nieces. Whether you are looking for the best husband for your only daughter or a suitable wife for one of your two sons, whether you are looking to add new blood to your family by marrying into foreign nobility – you will be working to make your family rise in status through prestige and wealth, new skills and abilities.

It is a fun game with a new concept and I really enjoy it. However, there are some small rules which can be a bit annoying to teach and you really need to play one full game before you can have any real sense of strategy and what you are doing. This is fine, but games can be long if people go slow. You are essentially playing a solitaire game and have almost no interaction. The time of the game is maybe 20 minutes on average times the number of players.

Great genealogy game with awesome solo option
It is fun to create your legacy or to research your ancestors (solo variant). The game is set in the 18th century and has you marrying your offspring off in the most advantageous way possible as well as guiding the future generations. It is a worker placement mechanism. The theme is unusual and very rich throughout.

A good game, the only issue is how much table space it takes up. It is a real challenge to organize your cards to fit on even large tables. Also has a decent amount of bookkeeping as you play.

Everyone I've played this with has really enjoyed it, from my reluctant husband who isn't into board games to hardcore gamers in my game group. It's a light worker placement with a well integrated and original theme as well as meaningful decisions. I've also had fantastic customer service from Portal Games. I definitely recommend this one.

Could use an expansion for more friends and variety with the ventures / mansions - good bones, but could use some fleshing out.

Fabulous game, loaded with theme & strategy
This has very quickly become one of my favorite new games, and I am not one who immediately flocks to every new game which is released. Each player plays the role of an aristocratic patriarch or matriarch (your choice --- each has its own costs and benefits) who is trying to establish a prominent dynasty in 18th century France. The players will literally build a family over four generations (be prepared to dedicate LOTS of table space for this) and, along the way, acquire wealth and prestige through strategic marriages & friendships, acquisition of property and titles, and the occasional mission. The game is extraordinarily well-balanced, and reflective of the theme. Virtually every action will yield benefits, but they also come at a costs, and the player must calculate if the costs are worth paying. There are plenty of decisions which will reward the player materially (more money! yay!) but will cause the family to lose honor and prestige (oh dear...my snooty friends don't seem to want to associate with me now).As with lots of hand management games, timing is everything & the players must work to make the most of the very-limited actions they have available to them. There are enough opportunities for a player to derail the plans of his opponents (does it look like someone has designs on that dukedom, but doesn't have enough money this turn to acquire it? Better snap it up before he has the chance!) to keep the game from being little more than multi-player solitaire. The game scales beautifully and works well as a solitaire game, all the way up to four players. I especially enjoy the challenges of the solitaire game, which puts restrictions on your choice of actions in a way that makes hand management even more important than it sometimes is in the multi-player games. I haven't yet played the "Testament" solitaire variant, but I have heard that it is especially challenging.Echoing another reviewer, I would agree that there is a small lack of balance in the end-of-game bonuses found in the secret patron cards, but I have also found that players who focus too much on the end-game bonuses do so to their own detriment. My highest scores have come when I have decided not to let the requirements of the patron card determine my in-game decision-making.This is such a fun game! I have seen some people compare this to "Last Will," and I suppose there is something to that, but I find that the decision-making here is much more intuitive (and thematically consistent) than anything I have ever experienced in Last Will. Just writing a review about it makes me want to get the game out and play it yet again!
