Wonder of the Age: Master Painters of India, 1100-1900

It's more a collection of known master painters, so many style of Indian art forms in that period itself aren't covered.
This book was a bit of a disappointment for me. As a person who has studied Indian art, the below are my reasons. The things I like are what has already been said in other reviews before. The print quality of the paintings are great. I love the size of the book and the quality of paper used. Great to study the technique and understand it. Beautiful collection. But I think the title is a little misleading. In the sense that, it does really encompass variety of styles in Indian art. So it shouldn't have been term art of India. I think they have attempted to bring out the names of Masters hitherto unknown or unrecognized which is a magnificent attempt. But a lot of the beautiful works itself was not portrayed because the artist was unknown? If you are looking for a comprehensive collection of Indian art forms itself this is not going to give the picture.

So well done
I am really delighted with this book, and the quality of the reproductions. The text brings together elements in the history of world art that I've only begun to understand - how this part of the world developed its own art style and concepts. The event that set me looking for a book on Indian painting was an exhibit at the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco, titled "Yoga". On display were many paintings from the period represented in this book, and I found them so beautiful in all their humanity and decorative detail. It's an inspiring and gorgeous book, and will enrich my thinking.

Disappointed
I bought the book after looking at the you tube video of the author who was describing some of the paintings in detail and showing the details of the miniatures.I assumed the book will have all this, but was pretty disappointed with the size of the images. They should have been shown blown up to be able to appreciate the details. Only some of them were blown up and also part of the painting. Would have expected better images than this.

This has given me excellent insight on the Mughal miniatures I bought at the Red Fort in Delhi. I'd previously had a hard time estimating both the date they were painted and the name of the artist. Good book. Turns out my little treasures are quite valuable!

:)
This book offers a well written and insightful window into the eclectic and colorful world of Indian Art. Talented and masterful artists and their works from various regions of India are discussed and contextualized. This, at least for me, is so far the greatest and most informative intro into Indian art, artists and techniques i've come across. Comprehensive, well illustrated with colorful plates-many full page-and concise informative writing.Recommended.

wonder of the age: master painters of india, 1100-1900
This book is the catalog that accompanies an exhibit of the same title at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. It is a beautiful exhibit and the catalog is informative and well illustrated with examples from the show.

Frustratingly small images
Like many such “scholarly” books, it is rather underwhelming when it comes to the pictorial and aesthetic quality of the actual images. Much space is devoted to the frames and decorative borders, bindings etc. leaving the actual images very small. The works are treated more like objects/artifacts to be catalogued rather than pictorial, artistic statements to be savoured. Pages upon pages, devoted to iconographic/bibliographic data make for a very dull read indeed.

Great Study Of Indian Master Artists
This book highlights the major master artists before and during the Mughal period. The text, accompanying each art work, is highly informative. The work of each artist is unique, beautiful, and equal to any Renaissance work of the time.

Imprescindible para el que ame la India
Reproducciones perfectas. Bonita encuadernación y textos interesantes. Recopilación de artistas tanto induces como musulmanes lo que da una visión bastante completa de la importancia de las miniaturas en el arte de la India
